Regarded as the ‘Oscars of the Internet', the Webby Awards have been honoring online excellence for more than a decade now.
Revealed Tuesday, the nominations for the 13th Annual Webby Awards were led by The New York Times, which was nominated in 13 categories including the best newspaper website, best writing and best political and business blogs.
U.S. television network NBC’s website followed with 12 nominations, including one for the online coverage of last year’s Beijing Olympics. Also, NBC.com was nominated in the broadband category for pouring out full TV episodes on the web.
Comedy Web site FunnyOrDie.com also attracted some attention, grabbing two nominations for its gay marriage video "Prop 8: The Musical”, which shows supporters and non-supporters of California's Prop 8 on the November ballot, featuring Jack Black, John C. Reilly, Maya Rudolph, Allison Janney, Neil Patrick Harris, Rashida Jones and more.
Proposition 8 was passed in the Nov. 2008 general election in California, after which the definition of marriage was restricted to opposite-sex couples and eliminated same-sex couples' right to marry.
FunnyOrDie.com was created by comedian Will Ferrell and actor/director Adam McKay.
‘The Onion’ fetched eight nominations with all its mockery, while Sundance Channel got five. Wired.com and the online portal for the movie ‘Coraline’ were both nominated in four categories and the web series Children’s Hospital won three nominations, including Best Comedy Individual Episode, Best Comedy Series and Best Individual Performance (Rob Corddry).
'The Daily Beast’, the comical FAIL Blog and cooking destination Cookstr got two nominations each.
Paris Hilton’s funny views on politics while responding to Senator John McCain's presidential ad campaign made her Best Individual Short or Episode Nominee at the Webbys. Sarah Silverman's ‘The Great Schlep’ was also among the nominated videos.
The Webby Awards, presented by the International Academy of Digital Arts and Sciences --a 550-member body of Web experts, business figures and celebrities, was established in 1996.
Winners will be announced on May 5, 2009, and a ceremony to honor the prize-winners will held in New York on 8 June, 2009.
All nominees of the Webby Awards are also eligible for the People's Voice Award, which is selected by the worldwide public.
Webby Awards: Drama Series
There are a lot of great shows nominated this year. If you are voting, take a look at "Speedie Date." It's in the Drama Series category. It's pretty great.
Hooray for the Webby Awards!
