Directed by Peter Chelsom from a script by Dan Berendsen, “Hannah Montana: The Movie” broke several minor box-office records. It not only became the best April showing in the industry history for a Disney movie, but also fetched $17.3 million in ticket sales on the opening day to break a record for a G-rated live-action film.
Disney distribution president Chuck Viane said of Miley’s role in the movie, "What she pulled off here, based on tracking, is amazing. It's a tribute to her and her fan base." The movie became Miley Cyrus’s third No. 1 film, along with Bolt and Hannah Montana and Miley Cyrus: Best of Both Worlds Concert.
Box-office researcher Media By Numbers LLC claimed that “Hannah Montana,” from Walt Disney Co., toppled the action film “Fast & Furious” to achieve the top slot. The latter garnered $28.8 million.
Cyrus blogged on Twitter, “omgomg! my fans rock! the movie is doing great you guys! omg AND its all cause of you!!!! I LOVE U ALL! IF YOU HAVENT SEEN IT YET CHECK IT!”
“Hannah had a gigantic Good Friday, when kids were out of school, it didn’t do as well on Saturday or Easter Sunday, but this was well above expectations,” said Steve Mason, a film analyst with BigHollywood.com.
The runaway success of television series “Hannah Montana” prompted the making of “Hannah Montana: The Movie”. In the television series, Miley Cyrus plays a teen-age star who comes back to her place of birth to get away from the demands of fame.
Disney’s rendezvous with the big screen has not been very fruitful. Previously “The Lizzie McGuire Movie”, and “Jonas Brothers: The 3D Concert Experience” could not live up to the expectations. Thus, history was not on Disney’s side.
