New York -- Some unhappy customers have discovered the hard way that taking their iPhones overseas can lead to thousands of dollars in charges.

AT&T Wireless sent Jay Levy of Hewlett Harbor, N.Y., a bill for $4,800 for the iPhones he, his wife and daughter used on a Mediterranean cruise. Most of the cost came from roaming charges for data transfers like stock market and weather reports that come in automatically even when iPhones are turned off.

"They have periodic updates on their data files, and they translate into megabucks," Levy told New York Newsday. "This is akin to your bank having automatic access to your ATM machine and is siphoning money out during all times of the day and night without your knowledge."

Herbert Kliegerman of The Bronx has sued over $2,200 in charges he racked up while in Mexico. He is seeking class-action status.
