Washington -- The manufacturer of painkillers Darvon and Darvocet said it will comply with a U.S. request to take the drugs off the market due to safety concerns.
The U.S. Food and Drug Administration says new clinical data shows the drug propoxyphene "puts patients at risk of potentially serious or even fatal heart rhythms" and says its risks outweigh the benefits, The Wall Street Journal reported Friday.
Darvon is propoxyphene alone, and Darvocet combines that ingredient with acetaminophen.
Xanodyne, the maker of the two branded products, says it will pull the drugs from the market.
The FDA said it's asking makers of generic versions to pull their drugs, too.

Washington -- The United States has 13 million tons of valuable and vital rare earth elements, but extracting them could take years, a report on the country's supply says.
"Rare earths" are elements vital to modern life and advanced technologies and are used in everything from disc drives, hybrid cars and sunglasses to lasers and aircraft used by the military, NewScientist.com reported Friday.
Ninety-seven percent of the world's supply is controlled by China, which has been tightening its export quotas, leading many industrialized nations to start measuring their own resources of the indispensable elements.

Las Cruces, N.M. -- SpaceShipTwo, the suborbital space tourist craft, is entering a period of aggressive U.S. testing to prepare it for commercial operations, its backers say.
At Spaceport America, a facility under construction in New Mexico as the home of Virgin Galactic, the spaceship is being prepared for more glide tests and the eventual fitting of its hybrid rocket motor.
Starting space tourism operations is a challenging endeavor, a Virgin Galactic executive said.
"There are a lot of different pieces to it. Job number one is to continue progressing and to eventually finish the flight test program safely and build a set of vehicles that can be flown safely with precious cargo," CEO George Whitesides told SPACE.com.

There's no foolproof way to know the future for Clorox (NYSE: CLX) or any other company. However, certain clues may help you see potential stumbles before they happen -- and before your stock craters as a result. Rest assured: Even if you're not monitoring these metrics, short-sellers are.

No doubt about it -- Netflix (Nasdaq: NFLX)has been an amazing stock. It kills me to think about the money I missed on this one by not buying. It's not because I couldn't find an attractive entry point. It's because I forgot (just plain, boneheaded forgot) to add it to my watchlist the last time it dipped into the $20s.

Although business headlines still tout earnings numbers, many investors have moved past net earnings as a measure of a company's economic output. That's because earnings are very often less trustworthy than cash flow, since earnings are more open to manipulation based on dubious judgment calls.

I finally get my wish. Kayak is one of the seven companies that I was hoping would go public in 2010. Well, it finally filed for its IPO this week. Since the other six companies appear to have different ideas than my tickertape wishes, the travel comparison site will have to do.
