New York -- A former boxer's championship belt was stolen from his niece's New York apartment shortly before he was thrown out by the family, investigators say.
The belt belonging to former WBC middleweight champion Iran "The Blade" Barkley was stolen Oct. 28 from the apartment in the Patterson Houses project in the Bronx, the New York Post reported Wednesday.
Two weeks after the theft, Barkley's niece changed the locks on the apartment in the Patterson Houses on Third Avenue and 142nd Street and Barkley, who had been unable to contribute to family expenses, found himself homeless, the newspaper said.
Barkley won the belt in 1988 after beating Tommy "The Hitman" Hearns in a three-round upset.

London -- Actor Liam Neeson presided over a dinner that raised nearly $400,000 to help rebuild the Lyric Theatre in Belfast, Northern Ireland.
The BBC said Meryl Streep, Aidan Quinn, Ciaran Hinds, Conleth Hill and Brian Kennedy were among the 50 or so guests at the fundraiser, which took place at a posh New York penthouse apartment.
The original Lyric Theatre, built in 1951, is where Neeson began his career and he has long been one of its patrons, the British broadcaster noted.
The outdated facility is being rebuilt on the same site. It is expected to cost $28 million and is scheduled to open this year, the BBC said.
