Bigger crowds expected on Black Friday

Milwaukee -- A Milwaukee manager is expecting the biggest crowds ever when Black Friday shoppers begin their annual pilgrimage to the malls.

"The retailers are very optimistic heading into Friday," says Chris Jaeger, manager of the Bayshore Town Center in Glendale, Wis.

Jaeger told the Milwaukee Journal Sentinel indications are "they're going to pull out all the stops for Black Friday."

Surveys by the Conference Board point to bigger crowds but lower spending.
Average per-household holiday gift spending is expected to be $390 this year, down from an average of $418 in 2008.

For the first time ever Wal-Mart will stay open round the clock from 7 a.m. on Thursday until 11 p.m. on Black Friday, the Journal Sentinel says.

Retail beat expectations in October

Washington -- Retail sales rose more than expected in October from September, although sales were down from a year ago, the U.S. Commerce Department said Wednesday.

October sales hit $347.5 billion, up 1.4 percent from September and 1.7 percent lower than October 2008.
Economists predicted a 0.9 percent month-to-month increase. The department, however, revised September's figure from a drop of 1.5 percent to a 2.3 percent decline.

In October, automobile sales jumped 7.4 percent after skidding 14.3 percent in September with the cessation of the "cash for clunkers" federal rebate program.

US House, Senate approve 2010 budget outline

Washington, April 3 -- US lawmakers Thursday approved a $3.5-trillion budget outline for 2010 that closely mirrors President Barack Obama's priorities for the country.

The vote in the House of Representatives was 233-196, largely along party lines, and came after weeks of polarising debate that exposed deep differences between majority Democrats and opposition Republicans over how to resuscitate the US economy.

The Senate voted 55 to 43 on a slightly different version of the 2010 budget proposal, which will require lawmakers from both chambers to forge a compromise in the coming weeks.

Senate majority leader Harry Reid said that the "responsible" budget "will start cleaning up the mistakes of the past and make critical investments in our future".

Snow makes retail sales slide in February

London, March 10: Heavy snow played spoilsport as British retailers saw sales plunge again in February. The fall in sales was also attributed to cessation of the enormous discounts and freebies offered to the customers during the New Year period. Foolish Book Review: "Biography of the Dollar"

Even the most casual observer of the financial scene knows by now that the good old U.S. greenback has been on about a six-year slide versus many of the world's other currencies.
