Montalcino, Italy -- Italian authorities resolved a certification issue for Brunello di Montalcino wine, which will continue to be exported to the United States, authorities said.

Exports of the popular wine to the United States were in question until June 23, when the U.S. Treasury's Alcohol and Tobacco and Trade Bureau posted rules that said the wine needed to be co-signed by the producer and an Italian official to certify its authenticity, ANSA reported Thursday.

Prior to that, the bureau had demanded the wine be certified through laboratory testing.

The final issue in the dispute was for the Italians to resolve which officials would certify the shipments.

Italians resolved the issue by choosing the Ministry of Agriculture.

''With this act we have not only reinforced our system to guarantee the utmost protection of the consumer, but also restored the image of Brunello, which is a symbol of Italian excellence not only in the United States but the whole world,'' Agriculture Minister Luca Zaia said.

Torquay, England -- British police said they plan to prohibit alcohol sales in whatever town is chosen by organizers of a massive beach party.

Police officials said they will use a power outlined under the Licensing Act 2003 that allows an emergency blanket ban on alcohol sales to prohibit the beverages from being sold in one of five towns being considered by organizers of the event, The Daily Mail reported Tuesday.

The party, which was organized on social networking Web site Facebook, is planned to take place in Torquay, Paignton, Preston, Goodrington or Broadsands.

The actual location of the event, billed on Facebook as "the biggest ever beach party," will not be announced until hours before the start of the blowout.

"The event is likely to cause disruption and difficulty for our community. The supply and consumption of alcohol would add to those difficulties," police Superintendent Chris Singer said.

Edinburgh, Scotland -- Industry officials say an explosion of Scotch whiskey fans in the Far East is straining the ability of Scotland to produce enough of the coveted brown liquor.

Soaring demand from places such as China and Singapore is showing no signs of slowing down, unnamed industry players told The Times of London Saturday, noting that whiskey sales to the two countries rose from $90 million in 2003 to nearly $600 million last year, The situation is putting pressure on Scotland to produce more whiskey.

Industry sources told the newspaper it's trying to respond with a new push for investment in production plants, but there's a problem, they say: Getting supply levels right is tricky because too much supply can quickly produce a glut on the market.

"Some journalists tell me we will soon be producing too much, others too little, so we have probably got it about right," David Williamson, an industry spokesman, said.
