Nearly 100 fall prey to staph food poisoning in US

Think twice before feasting on a tempting cake this new years' eve as around 100 people have fallen sick due to Staphylococcus aureus food poisoning during the past two months in the nation, the U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) said Monday.

Police: Woman wore thong, pasties to store

Moorehead, N.D. -- Police in North Dakota said they cited a woman after she allegedly walked into a drugstore wearing only a thong, pasties, a small towel and whipped cream.

Investigators said Katherine Margaret Watson, 37, walked into the Walgreens store in downtown Moorehead at about 5:45 p.m. wearing a "partial" green towel, a thong, pasties and whipped cream, The Forum, Fargo, N.D., reported Tuesday.

A bystander called police and the woman told officers she was a "free thinker" making a statement, Lt. Tory Jacobson said.

"She said that if she did this at Sturgis, no one would look twice at her," Jacobson said.

However, he said the woman later admitted her stunt might have been "a little over the top."

Anti-drinking campaigns hardly any use--study

A novel study on the “effects of anti-drinking ads” suggests that people exposed to the ads are unlikely to benefit from them; instead, they are more likely to indulge in drinking activities as compared to those who are not exposed to such ads.

Heineken to buy Femsa for $7.6 billion

Amsterdam -- Beer producer Heineken said it had reached an agreement to buy Mexican brewer Femsa for $7.6 billion, a price low enough to surprise one market analyst.

"We were expecting a deal north of $10 billion. The way they structured it, this is creating more value," Marco Gulpers, a beverage market analyst told The New York Times.

The deal for Femsa's brewing unit plants Heineken's feet firmly in Latin America. Femsa, which had also been pursued by SABMiller, makes Dos Equis and Tecate and owns and operates a Latin American convenience store chain.

"It's a transformational deal for Heineken, Gulpers said.

Heineken said it would issue 86 million shares to purchase Femsa, after which Femsa will control 20 percent of Heineken Group.

Oh baby, check out the gourmet grub!

Birmingham -- Award-winning chefs in Britain are creating tempting tasty treats for toddlers who they say may want something more than strained peas and peaches.

Michelin award winner Luke Tipping, executive chef of Simpsons in Birmingham, and Aktar Islam, Laslan's British Curry Award-winner, are whipping up dishes for the definitely way-younger set, The Daily Telegraph reported Monday.

"There's nothing wrong with a baby eating a fresh meal, I would rather they did that than give them the usual processed stuff that's out there," Tipping said, adding a portion of his dill-seasoned cheddar cheese fish pie would cost about $1.60, less than some jarred baby food on the market.

CA to experiment with coloured balls for day-night Tests

Sydney, June 22: In its attempt to pioneer day-night Tests, Cricket Australia (CA) will set a mock Test with different coloured balls under lights.

CA's operations manager Michael Brown said that it would be a controlled experiment during which players would be invited at the Melbourne Cricket Guard (MCG) or the Sydney Cricket Ground (SCG) to face coloured balls under lights and Channel Nine will see how it looks on camera.

The Sydney Morning Herald reported that the experiment can be organised in the coming summer.

"Ideally, we would like to get some players along, get the cameras along, turn on the lights and see if we can have a game of cricket for an hour," Brown was quoted as saying by the daily.

US House, Senate approve 2010 budget outline

Washington, April 3 -- US lawmakers Thursday approved a $3.5-trillion budget outline for 2010 that closely mirrors President Barack Obama's priorities for the country.

The vote in the House of Representatives was 233-196, largely along party lines, and came after weeks of polarising debate that exposed deep differences between majority Democrats and opposition Republicans over how to resuscitate the US economy.

The Senate voted 55 to 43 on a slightly different version of the 2010 budget proposal, which will require lawmakers from both chambers to forge a compromise in the coming weeks.

Senate majority leader Harry Reid said that the "responsible" budget "will start cleaning up the mistakes of the past and make critical investments in our future".

Some brands of salmon recalled in Canada

OTTAWA, April 1 -- The Canadian Food Inspection Agency is warning the public not to consume certain brands of smoked salmon and lox due to possible bacterial contamination.

The manufacturer, Niagara Smoked Fish Ltd. of Mississauga, Ontario, said the products -- distributed in Ontario, Quebec and Alberta -- might be contaminated with Listeria monocytogenes.

The recall includes Strubs-brand "bagelox" Norwegian style Scottish style and Danish style sliced smoked Steelhead salmon; Niagara-brand smoked Steelhead and Atlantic salmon; and Ocean Jewel-brand party pack sliced smoked Atlantic salmon.
