'Brenda Starr' end date drawing near

Chicago -- Writer Mary Schmich and artist June Brigman say they are ending their work on "Brenda Starr," their seven-day-a-week comic strip about an intrepid reporter.

The strip was created by Dale Messick and had its trial run in a Chicago Tribune comic-book insert June 30, 1940. It will have its final appearance in newspapers Jan. 2, Tribune Media Services said Thursday.

The property's owner made the decision to end the feature's newspaper syndication when Schmich and Brigman determined they would finish their long stewardship of the feature.

Family size in the United Kingdom shrinks

London -- The size of the average family in the United Kingdom is getting smaller, the U.K. Office for National Statistic says.

Researchers looked at women born in England and Wales in 1964 and compared them with their mothers' generation, represented by women born in 1937, the BBC reported Thursday.

By 2009 the younger generation had an average of 1.9 children, while at the same stage in their lives their mothers had an average 2.4 children, the data shows.

And more women in the younger generation are deciding not to have children at all, the researchers found.

Twenty percent of women born in 1964 are childless, compared with 12 percent of women born in 1937.

Canadian PM Harper covers Mick Jagger

Ottawa -- Canadian Prime Minister Stephen Harper, backed by an Ottawa band, brought the house down with a five-song party set ending with "Jumpin' Jack Flash."

At the Conservative Party's annual Christmas party Wednesday night, Harper startled many by having his wife Laureen make opening remarks before he sat down on stage at an electric piano with the four-man local band, Herringbone, Postmedia News reported.

Harper sang and played through "Sweet Caroline" by Neil Diamond, "I'm On My Way" by the Proclaimers, The Who's "The Seeker" and "Share the Land" by the Guess Who.

The report said many of the people in the packed ballroom were unaware of Harper's musical abilities and stood clapping and shouting, demanding an encore.

Minister mistakenly swears in Parliament

London -- Britain's policing minister said he was using the word "cuts" when he was accused of using a similarly-spelled profanity in the House of Commons.

Policing Minister Nick Herbert was met with laughter by fellow members of Parliament when he mispronounced "cuts," and Speaker John Bercow said listeners were having a problem with their hearing "playing tricks with them" and they "didn't hear what they thought they heard," Sky News reported Monday.

The gaffe came only hours after Radio 4 Today host Jim Naughtie mistakenly said the same word as a mispronunciation of Culture Secretary Jeremy Hunt's last name and colleague Andrew Marr made the same error while discussing Naughtie's mispronunciation.

Poll: Many spending less for holidays

Eeglewood -- A survey by Western Union indicates that 48 percent of women and 35 percent of men plan to spend less this holiday season than in previous years.

The Western Union Payments' quarterly Money Mindset Index survey also suggests 30 percent of adults have hidden gift purchases from their spouse or a significant other.

One in three women questioned in the survey said they are decreasing their list of gift recipients for this year. One in four men said the same.

Teens accused of calf thefts

Rothsay -- Police in Minnesota said they arrested two teenagers in connection with the thefts of 17 calves from barns in three counties.

Stearns County Sheriff John Sanner said Jesse Robert Ronsberg, 19, of Rothsay, and a 16-year-old Barnesville boy, whose name was not released, were arrested after deputies received a tip about the location of the calves, which were taken from barns in Stearns, Todd and Douglas counties, the St. Cloud (Minn.) Times reported Monday.

Investigators said the suspects told them they were planning to use the pilfered cattle to start their own farm and dairy operation.

The cattle were returned to their owners.
