Iran declares BBC Persian TV illegal

Tehran -- Iran has declared the recently established BBC Persian TV illegal and banned Iranian journalists and artists from working for the station, CNN reported.

"Considering the BBC's history of creating chaos in Iran, and its efforts to set the various strata of Iranian society against each other, the presence of the BBC Persian TV in the Islamic Republic is deemed to be illegal," Mohammad Hossein Saffar Harandi, the minister of culture and Islamic guidance, has announced, adding that plans for the BBC Persian TV channel were not carried out "with good will."

However, a spokesman for the English broadcaster insisted to CNN the BBC's latest operation -- which began airing programs in Farsi in Iran, Afghanistan and Tajikistan last week -- isn't breaking any Iranian laws.

'Guru,' 'Hottie' rake in the Razzie nods

Los Angeles -- Mike Myers' box-office and critical bomb "The Love Guru" was nominated for seven Razzie awards, including worst picture, in Los Angeles Wednesday.

Nominees for the previous year's worst film disasters are traditionally announced the day before Oscar nominations are revealed.

"Guru" also earned a worst actor nod for Myers, worst supporting actor mentions for Verne Troyer and Ben Kingsley, and a shot at the worst actress dishonor for Jessica Alba. The film was nominated for the worst director and screenplay prizes, as well.

"Guru" will compete for the bottom prize of worst picture against "Disaster Movie," "The Happening," "In the Name of the King: A Dungeon Siege Tale," "Meet the Spartans" and "The Hottie & the Nottie."

"Hottie" also racked up nods for worst director and screenplay, while its star Paris Hilton was nominated for worst actress and one half of the worst screen couple distinction, along with her co-star Joel David Moore.

Martin to be 'SNL' host for 15th time

New York -- Steve Martin has agreed to make his 15th appearance as host of the New York-based sketch comedy TV show "Saturday Night Live," NBC said.

The actor, comedian, author, playwright and producer is slated to make his first appearance in three years in the episode of the show airing Jan. 31.

Grammy Award-nominated singer Jason Mraz is scheduled to be the show's musical guest that night.

Martin's film credits include "Shopgirl," "Cheaper by the Dozen," "The Jerk," "All of Me" "Dirty Rotten Scoundrels," "Father of the Bride,"

"Parenthood" and "Planes, Trains and Automobiles." He also scripted and starred in the hit comedies "Three Amigos," "Roxanne," "L.A. Story" and "Bowfinger," and the drama "Grand Canyon."

Martin, a 2007 recipient of the prestigious Kennedy Center Honor, will be seen starting Feb. 6, reprising his role of Inspector Clouseau in "The Pink Panther 2."

Coldplay, Duffy top Brit Award nods

London -- The British rock band Coldplay and singer Duffy each earned four nominations for Brit Awards, organizers in London said.

Coldplay was nominated for best British group and best British live act, while its album "Viva La Vida or Death and all His Friends" is up for best British album and its song "Viva La Vida" is in the running for best British single.

Duffy garnered mentions in the best British female solo artist and British breakthrough act categories. Her CD "Rockferry" was nominated for best British album and her song "Mercy" for best British single.

Adele, Scouting for Girls and Elbow were nominated for three Brit Awards apiece.

Competing with Coldplay and Duffy for the best British album prize are Elbow's "The Seldom Seen Kid," the Ting Tings' "We Started Nothing" and Radiohead's "In Rainbows."
