Interview Tips for Employers

An interview offers an opportunity to evaluate and know about a prospective employee. It helps to explore a potential candidate’s motivation level, ability to work in a team, and other personal traits.

Every business should know what it wants from a prospective employee and conduct interviews accordingly. I would suggest a few points here which must always be kept in mind.

It is a good idea to be prepared before interviewing any shortlisted employee. Keeping the interviews on the same day is a good idea as it saves lot of time and effort.

Before starting an interview make sure you are dressed appropriately. Welcome the candidate with a warm smile and a good handshake; it leaves a wonderful impression. Introduce yourself to him/her and give them ample time to introduce themselves.

It is suggested to brief the candidate about your business and job responsibilities. Once that is done, feel free to ask him/her anything under the sun. Let the candidate speak freely and don’t try to dominate the interviewee.

Keep reviewing the candidates’ resume side by side and ask yourself does he really fit in your organization. Also check and see if you can give him/her the suitable profile in which he/she has specialized. For e.g., a candidate who has studied human resources is not suitable for investment banking division.

Always make sure to have a positive attitude while interviewing someone. Never give the impression that you are restricted in your thinking. But if you notice something suspicious in the candidate’s resume, write it down and make sure you ask before he/she leaves.

Some of these questions could pertain to working time e.g. why wasn’t the candidate working in this period of time or why did he/she never work more than 3 months in the past jobs. I would also advice every employer to do complete background check before hiring any person.

Once the interview is over, close it by thanking the candidate for coming. Let them know you will be contacting them soon if you decide they are found suitable for the position.
