The No. 1 personal computer maker Dell and Google have signed an agreement whereby every Dell computer will be installed with Google softwares at the factory level itself. The three year agreement is been seen as just the first of many. Under the current deal Dell will load the Google Pack onto its computers at the factory level.
The software bundle will include the Google toolbar, a co-branded Internet Explorer, and other routine softwares which would help users locate their files and organize their data. If the entire Google pack is installed it will include other softwares too including image editing etc.
This new deal will surely be a threat to Microsoft which has enjoyed domination over the softwares that came factory installed and now with Google chasing Microsoft in all spheres they have a reason to be worried. The Mountain View company's profits are rising in every field its stepping into, starting from the search field and now onto the softwares too.
The deal which was initially termed as a rumor by Google co-founder Larry Page in January. The company however disclosed that they followed up the deal and now it has been made official. The details of the deal are not known yet but analysts say that the three year deal could see at least 100 million computers made by Dell to be loaded with Google software.
Google on the other hand would end up paying around one billion dollars to the manufacturer. Analysts also said that if Google pays up five dollars for every PC that comes equipped with its software, they can recover that cost with just 12 clicks on their advertisements by users. Not a bad deal for Google at all.
Microsoft on the other hand is at the receiving end of its own game. A decade ago, Microsoft had claimed that by pre installing softwares in a computer at the factory level they had a better chance to get more customers as users hardly changed the installed programs. With Google adopting the same strategy Microsoft will need to find a new way to snatch back its share else the time is not far away when Google will sweep out Microsoft from this field too. Another thing that might hurt Microsoft is that Dell had been carrying softwares on their systems and now this sudden switch to Google softwares.
With Google churning out new products by the day, which have been taken up by users in a positive way, Microsoft will need to rework the strategy of not allowing Google to repeat what they did with their share in the search market which has been constantly eating up everyone else's share. How soon do they manage to put such a strategy into place remains to be seen.
Users can expect the Google software equipped PC's to be available in the market by the end of this month. Small and mid-sized businesses can also expect the same around the same time. Similar systems will also be offered to some large corporate customers, the details of whom have not been released yet.
Will the month-end reveal a new battle for supremacy in the PC market ? Lets see.
