The garage rock band, which was formed in 2003, was selected the winner from over 200 entries, beating local bands like ‘The Presets’, ‘Beaches’, ‘Cut Copy’, ‘The Drones’, ‘C.W Stoneking’, ‘Jack Ladder’, ‘Tom Cooney’ and ‘Ross McLennan’.
The Australian Music Prize, which came into existence in 2005, is a sole purpose entity sponsored by various music industry figures with an aim to encourage independent music in Australia. It is an annual cash award of $30,000 given to an Australian band or solo artist in recognition of the merit of an album released during the year of award.
“The Eddie Current Suppression Ring” started out as members jamming during a Christmas party at a vinyl pressing plant where they worked. An ad-lib into a tape recorder by now lead singer Brendan Suppression resulted in the production of the band’s first CD recording called ‘7 inches’ with singles like ‘Get up morning’, ‘you don’t care’ and ‘so many things’.
In May 2008, the band released its second CD, ‘Primary Colours’. The album sold more than 3,000 copies within the first three weeks and reached the number six position on the ARIA awards.
Ironically, the rock group has decided to call its next album ‘Sufficient Funds’. Mike Young, the band’s guitarist with a quartet states, “I think we want to do something immoral with our prize money, instead of doing the obvious touring, like tour an exotic island and playing shows to nobody. But we’ll probably spend it on building a recording space.”
The band is known for their live tours and lead singer Brendan Suppression’s power packed performances in which he always wears gloves. Commenting on their lead singer’s trademark gloves, Young further says, “Brendan’s taste is becoming more worldly so a $29 golf glove might not cut it any more.”
The award show, which was held in Sydney, saw ECSR taking home a cheque of $30,000 from the PPCA - Phonographic Performance Company of Australia. The only other award went to Sydney singer songwriter Jack Ladder. He received the $15,000 Red Bull Award In Recognition Of Outstanding Potential for his album ‘Love Is Gone’.
