California, United States, December 25: The famous American writer, artist and film director Arthur Miller’s 'The Spirit' is a terrific entertainment. It’s a better and a more complete film than Miller’s ‘Sin City’ or ‘300.’
The movie is based on the story created in the 1940s by comic man, Will Eisner. It is an American police-superhero film adaptation, which stars Gabriel Macht as the Spirit and Samuel L. Jackson as his nemesis, the Octopus.
The film revolves around slain cop Denny Colt (Gabriel Macht) who is killed, buried and rises from his grave as the Spirit - the enigmatic masked avenger. The sprit is more determined than ever to fight evil. The Octopus, a villain, is going to wipe out the entire city and kill anyone unlucky enough to see his face. The spirit tracks the villain. Eva Mendes plays a jewel thief named Sand Saref while Scarlett Johansson plays Silken Floss. Both the female characters worked well.
The Spirit is not a typical movie. It is a colorful, funny and adventurous film. The script has moments of offbeat humor and the production is very stylized. The visual approach i.e. using of green screen, is almost the same as in ‘Sin City’ and “300”. The Spirit is uneven, but its campy adventure provides some amusing, escapist fun.
Some critics said that there is no emotional touch in the movie. The film was rated PG-13 by the Motion Picture Association of America (MPAA) for "intense sequences of stylized violence and action, some sexual content and brief nudity”.
Some critics have even questioned about the costumes, dialogues and plot of the story. It appears as a novel to the audience and not as a moving picture.
