San Jose, December 4: Apple has removed the online antivirus help page from its website that guided customers in using antivirus software to secure their Mac.
Apple’s website had advised users to buy antivirus software for their Mac’s safety, which had received a lot of media’s attention as it indicated inefficiency on the part of Mac’s in-built security technologies. However, now Apple has removed the page from the website while the company spokesperson still suggests the need of antivirus software for Mac’s safety.
Apple’s spokesman said in a statement,” We have removed the Knowledge Base article because it was old and inaccurate.” He further said,’ The Mac is designed with built-in technologies that provide protection against malicious software and security threats right out of the box. However, since no system can be 100% immune from every threat, running antivirus software may offer additional protection".
Apple ensured the users through their website that Mac OS X is designed keeping in mind its security. Hence, Mac is safe enough and not prone to any virus or any other malicious software.
It seems that in order to avoid any possible legal action for making an overstatement about the security of its products, Apple had decided to remove the help page.
Already Apple has been facing some legal challenges as result of which, the U.K. Advertising Standards Authority had imposed a ban on the television advertisements of their two iphone 3Gs in august and November. Because according to them those advertisements were exaggerating. Replying a customers’ complaint, the agency had agreed that iphone 3G was not up to the mark to what was shown on the ads.
Apple was again sued in October for falsely representing the speed, strength, and performance of the 3G-bandwidth network of Apple’s iphone 3G with AT&T.
