London, December 1: “The X Factor” performance was called as Britney Spears' comeback. Millions of people in anticipation tuned in to watch Britney as she performed her new single “Womanizer”, but they were only left disappointed.
About 12.8 million people watched “The X Factor” on Saturday night to see Spears’ much-anticipated comeback. Even though her performance was far better than from last year’s MTV Video Music Awards, the audience was not pleased with her performance and lip-synching on the show, which prepared its contestants for what not to do in a live performance.
Simon Cowell, Louis Walsh, Cheryl Cole and Dannii Minogue, the show’s hosts gave Spears a standing ovation after her performance but it seemed, as they were the only ones who enjoyed it. Soon after the contestant Ruth Lorenzo was voted out of the show, many forums were flooded with messages about Spears’ performance.
One viewer wrote, "Britney's performance was a disgrace. I don't know how she had the nerve to stand on that stage and mime when 'amateur' singers gave such good performances. Simon Cowell should be ashamed to serve up such rubbish."
Other messages read, “It was terrible”, “All the contestants are better than her” and “She wasn’t even trying to sing.”
Despite the negative reactions, its executive producer, Richard Holloway said that they “were absolutely delighted at having the American pop phenomenon that is Britney Spears appearing on the No 1 entertainment show in the UK.”
A person close to Spears defended her lip-synching and said, “What we promised and what she wanted to deliver was a performance where she was back to her best, and that was what she did. She’s always been known for her dancing. We’re surprised at people’s reaction.”
After the show, Spears when to a nightclub in London called GAY, where her arrival created an uproar. People were expecting that the singer was going to make another performance at the club but Spears remained in the club’s VIP longue and refused to sing on stage.
Jeremy Joseph, promoter of GAY stated, “It was a nice surprise that she turned up. About ten minutes before we got a call from her management to say she was coming. We never advertised that she would be there but when she arrived I expected her to go on stage.”
A representative for Spears said in a statement, “Contrary to reports, Britney Spears was never booked to perform or even appear at GAY. She was invited to the evening but was never asked to perform. Following her incredible X Factor performance, Britney took up the invite and relaxed”.
