Blockbuster launches new Set-Top Box; MediaPoint player

Blockbuster, the famous online DVD-rental chain, in collaboration with 2Wire has launched, 2Wire MediaPoint digital-media player that would allow users to access the Blockbuster OnDemand content.

To ensure initial boost, Blockbuster would provide MediaPoint free of cost if you buy the advance rental of 25 Blockbuster OnDemand movies for $99. After the initial 25 rentals, you can enjoy the movies for as little as $1.99 each.

Blockbuster chairman and CEO, Jim Keyes highlighting the features of MediaPoint said, “The MediaPoint digital player, featuring Blockbuster OnDemand, is entertainment made easy. We are bringing Blockbuster, and the thousands of movies in our digital library, straight to customers' televisions".

You can easily install MediaPoint player ad run it with any broadband connection through Ethernet or W-Fi. It would offers DVD quality picture irrespective of your internet speed. You may watch movies right away or save them to watch later within 30 days. In addition, the player can also be connected to HDTV.

In order to move a step ahead of its rival Netflix, MediaPoint does not involve any monthly charge commitment unlike Netflix. Keys stated, "The player is simple to use, delivers DVD-quality video, and there's no monthly subscription commitment”. Blockbuster also promises to showcase newer movies through MediaPoint than the rivals, making some available soon after they get down of theatres.

Though Blockbuster has finally entered the movie-streaming arena, it would be difficult for it to pull down Netflix from its strongly held top position. Netflix also enjoys the advantage of being the initial mover in movie-streaming service. Netflix has been in the field for six months now and has been pretty quick in making some exclusive developments; Netflix has partnered with TiVo and Xbox to bring the famous TV shows, movies, web games directly to user’s PC or television set through online transactions.
