Talk show queen Oprah Winfrey endorsed Kindle - Amazon's Wireless Reading Device, as her "new favorite gadget" during Oct 24, 2008 telecast of her internationally syndicated talk show.
Oprah praised and proclaimed Kindle through her quoted words- "new favorite gadget", "life changing", "the wave of the future" and "most amazing thing".
On the show, Oprah was joined by Amazon.com CEO Jeff Bezos, to talk about Kindle that was launched in the United States by Amazon.com in Nov 2007.
Kindle is an electronic reading device that is capable of storing more than 190,000 books, magazines, blogs and newspapers. It allows free of charge wireless access of the same at just the hit of a button. The wireless access uses Whispernet technology to provide anytime-anywhere wireless search, download, and read facility to its users. And the biggest relief for all is that you do not have to take any service plan or pay monthly wireless bills.
The device makes use of the revolutionary, sharp and high-resolution electronic-paper display that look like crisp text on paper and can be easily read even in sunlight, unlike the glary and strenuous computer screen.
An interesting feature of kindle is that you can download (for FREE) and read first chapters of the books before actually buying them which would save you the pain of purchasing a non-interesting piece of art.
The device has a long battery life, is light weight (only 10.3 ounces) and thinner than a pocketbook so one can carry around a complete and most modern library comfortably everywhere and take advantage of the same anywhere.
The endorsement by the media tycoon and an influential book advocator since 1990 has focused spotlight on the gizmo. It could not manage to capture this spotlight on its own since its birth in Nov 2007. This endorsement is also expected to boost the sales against its hardy competitor the Sony Reader. Her previous endorsements for other authors have already got their names instantly into The New York Times best-seller list.
A key difference between Kindles functionality and that of rival Sony Reader lies in the method to purchase books to read on the devices. Sony requires a wired connection to transfer the content bought earlier on a PC while Kindle has an inbuilt, free of charge wireless connection to allow its users to directly buy and download content from Amazon to device.
The Kindle costs $359 which is $59 more than the current model of Sony Reader PRS-505 ($300) but is $41 less than Sony Reader’s upcoming touchscreen PRS-700 model ($400).
According to Oprah customers should still ignore the high cost of the product’s purchase keeping in mind that Kindle would save its customer way more on discounts of purchase of books than its own price. All New York Times® Best Sellers and New Releases are $9.99 on Amazon, unless marked otherwise.
Good news for all Oprah viewers by Amazon was the special discount of $50 on the price of Kindle which can be availed by entering the promotional code "OPRAHWINFREY" in the checkout pipeline on Amazon.com (The offer is valid through Nov 1, 2008).

Kindle Price
I really think the price will stay at $299. They really need to compete with the new readers coming out, including the iPhone.
Conflict of Interest?
Besides "Kindle" being Oprah's "favorite new gadget," Jeff Bezos is one of Oprah's "favorite charity benefactors."
Given that Oprah and Bezos have a long relationship, and are involved with a number of charities together, I'm sure Bezos will "somehow" make it up to Oprah.
