Do you suffer from depression? And take antidepressants on a regular basis to elevate your mood? If yes, it is almost certain you endure a problematic sex life also. A study claims that Viagra can be really helpful for the women who are on antidepressants and face debilitating sexual desires.

In Wednesday's Journal of the American Medical Association, researchers argued that Viagra can help attian orgasm in women but cannot kick the sexual desire.

About 6 million women in the U.S. suffer from the problem of major depression.

The study observed the effect of Viagra on 98 premenstrual women of average age 37, who were patients of depression.

Psychologist Stanley Althof, director of the Center for Marital and Sexual Health of South Florida in West Palm Beach who had been a part of the study remarked that Viagra is good option for women who are on antidepressants and encounter orgasm problems but he clears that in case of women the intensity of arousal cannot be altered with Viagra. Only a partial benefit is possible.

Earlier studies too, suggest that antidepressants result in sexual side effects. Antidepressants such as Prozac, Paxil, Celexa and other drugs helps in the discharge of a hormone called serotonin in the brain which in turns hinders the release of another hormone called dopamine which causes orgasm.

27 per cent of women who were on dummy pill showed an improvement in their sexual activities while 72 per cent of women who were on the blue pill- Viagra reported a significant upgradation in their sex activity.

Althof mentioned that 43 percent of women who took Viagra suffered from indigestion, headache and reddening of skin.

The study has been incompetent in understanding the complexity of the sexual experiences in women, Psychologist Leonore Tiefer of New York University School of Medicine said.

According to the lead author of the study Dr. George Nurnberg, a psychiatrist at the University of New Mexico School of Medicine in Albuquerque, Viagra showed better results in men who were on antidepressants than in women.

The study certainly drives attention to the issue of nature of sexual disorders in men and women and their origin. Sexual disorders in women are far more complicated than those found in men.

"However you think about men and women, there are a lot of similarities," Dr. Irwin Goldstein, director of sexual medicine at Alvarado Hospital in San Diego said regarding the study.

Dr. Glenn D. Braunstein, an endocrinologist and chairman of the department of medicine at Cedars-Sinai Medical Center holds that, "This is a provocative study, but I would love to see it confirmed in a larger group of women."

“If I had to predict, use of Viagra will go up," he said. "A woman might not even ask her gynecologist for it -- she might just ask her significant other to give her some," he added.
