School officials of a Massachusetts high school were baffled when they discovered nearly half of the 17 expectant moms- none of whom older than 16 - had made a pact to get pregnant and raise their babies, and more shockingly "some girls seemed more upset when they weren't pregnant than when they were," principal Joseph Sullivan told Time.com.

The pregnancy rate at the 1,200-student school has quadrupled in past one year, Time.com said.

"We found out one of the fathers is a 24-year-old homeless guy," Sullivan told Time.com. This shows that girls just want to get pregnant as they think it’s cool and trendy irrespective of the fact who the father is.

Is it the outcome of much glorified teen pregnancy in the films like “Juno” or due to much created hype by media around 17-year-old pregnant Jamie Lynn Spears, star of a popular television show Zoey 101, who gave birth to a daughter on Thursday??

According to United Way, 71% of the babies born to teenage mothers are fathered by men over the age of 20, which is considered statutory rape, even if the under-age female consents to sex, it is illegal.

"In a world that is so technologically based, young people want to remind themselves that they are alive and human. One of the ways people do this is that they reproduce." said Keith Ablow, a psychiatrist and FOX News contributor, "People are increasingly going to stumble around to reconnect with something that is genuine and real. The obvious things people stumble around are sex, a desperate search for love and things like piercing and tattooing, which is an epidemic among young people."

Young people often are ill-informed about what they're getting into when they have pre-marital sex ending in a teen pregnancy. It’s a daunting task to raise a child when you're still a child, teens are under developed themselves to have the responsibility of raising another life.

"Children of teen parents often become teen parents themselves and the cycle often continues." Nicole Angresano, Associate Director at United Way

Teen pregnancy is not only a financial and social burden to the parents, but to society as a whole. With every growing belly, grows the responsibility of the society.

Sexual education can prevent growing epidemic of teenage pregnancy and teenagers who openly communicate with their parents are less likely to become teenage parents.

Until Americans get over their hysteria about giving teenagers access to birth control, they will continue to have the highest teen pregnancy rates in the western world.

Ablow believes that “parents need to give their kids more opportunities to genuinely express themselves. Otherwise, teenagers will find another way to express themselves that will ultimately disappoint their parents and cause them pain."
