Sprint Nextel Corp., the third-biggest US mobile-phone company, on Tuesday showed off a new touch-screen phone at the CTIA conference in Las Vegas. The new wireless handheld device, called "Instinct", is filled with such stunning features that it can dare to rival Apple’s iPhone.
The Reston, Virginia-based wireless carrier has teamed up with Samsung to launch their iPhone killer, Instinct. The two companies intend to bring their device that looks like the iPhone to the market in June.
While showcasing the new phone at CTIA Wireless 2008 trade show, Dan Hesse, Sprint Nextel’s chief executive officer, said, “Ladies and gentlemen, I give you the Instinct.”
He said their Instinct represents Sprint's direction of offering devices that give consumers everything they want from a wireless carrier: voice, data, and multimedia services. "People want the whole package," Hesse added.
The new weapon, called Samsung Instinct, aka Samsung SPH M-800, features a 3.1-in. touch screen, a 2.0 megapixel camera and has a 2GB MicroSD storage card that holds approximately 2,000 songs from Sprint Music Store.
Measuring 4.57 inches x 2.17 inches x 0.49 inches and weighing 4.4 ounces, the Instinct’s screen measures 3.1 inches, smaller than the iPhone’s 3.5 inches screen. It also includes two standard 1,000 mAmp batteries offering up to 5.75 hours of continuous talk time each.
The device has a GPS built in, and it runs on CDMA EV-DO Rev (800MHz/1900MHz), the fastest cellular broadband technology available on the Sprint and Verizon Wireless networks, for text messaging, e-mail, and connecting to the Web.
Sprint claims the Instinct owner would enjoy much faster data speeds than owners of iPhone currently do.
Besides a battery charging sleeve and travel charger, the new model also come with USB cable, 3.5mm headphones with built-in microphone, and leather case with stylus. It also has a 2-megapixel camera for still pictures and video recording. Advanced stereo Bluetooth 2.0, integrated world clock, SMS voice and text messaging with threaded text, Phone as Modem, picture caller ID and Sprint Mobile Sync are some other added features.
Sprint has not yet set the price for its smartphone.
