British singer Lily Allen has suffered a miscarriage, confirmed her record company spokesman. The singer was expecting her first child with boyfriend Ed Simons, one-half of the Chemical Brothers. She had announced her pregnancy only recently in December.

The 22-year-old singer and her boyfriend of four months were in a ‘state of shock’, said a report in British tabloid The Sun. referring to Allen's reputation as a wild child, the paper quoted an unnamed source as saying, “Lily's entire outlook on life changed after she found out she was pregnant. She was looking forward to being a mum and starting a family with Ed.” It added, "They are surrounded by friends, and family are offering support. It is a really difficult time for them."

A spokesman of Allen stated that the report of her miscarriage was true, but the singer and her partner would make no further comment. “We ask that their privacy be respected during this difficult time,” he said.

Allen, the daughter of comic actor Keith Allen shot to instant fame in the summer of 2006 with the number one hit ‘Smile’.

Her debut album, ‘Alright, Still’ received a great response from fans and reached number two in 2006. She is due for a follow-up record sometime later this year.

Allen had been recently chosen to be on the judging panel for this year's Orange Broadband prize for fiction.

Also, the singer has landed her own BBC Three show based around social networking, Lily Allen and Friends, which is expected to get underway sometime this year.

While announcing her pregnancy in December, a representative said that the couple was extremely thrilled but they would not comment since “the pregnancy is at a very, very early stage.” He requested for their space “as the health of Lily and their child is their paramount concern.”
