Lenovo, the maker of conventional black ThinkPad laptops for businessmen is set to navigate into a new arena with flashy notebook computers called IdeaPads, to target the everyday customers.
The IdeaPad Y510, Y710, and U110 models are powered by Intel’s dual-core Centrino mobile platform. They possess the facial recognition feature and come with a 1.3-megapixel embedded camera for security.
The new IdeaPad line boasts of Dolby Home Theatre surround sound and has dedicated gaming controls. They have Wi-Fi support, DVD/CD recordable combo drives, textured outer cases, and frameless screens. The machine has four speakers—one on each side and a subwoofer beneath it.
The Multimedia Control Center provides the users with easy-to-use software to play movies, listen to music and view photos. The touch sensitive controls allow the users to quickly select among multimedia choices, volume and equalizer.
"Our ThinkPad notebooks are well-known around the world as the best engineered computer for business -- for quality, reliability and thoughtful design," said Liu Jun, senior vice president and president, Consumer Business Group, Lenovo. "We're now bringing Lenovo's expertise in design and engineering to consumers with our Idea-branded PCs. We are confident we will grow our consumer business by blending innovative technologies like facial recognition with stylish designs to enhance the way people use technology in their personal lives."
The notebooks to be out in march, will available in blue, red and black and will carry a hefty price tag of $799 to $1,199. Lenovo promptly links high prices to better quality. "We don't want to be misunderstood as a low-end brand," said Craig Merrigan, vice president of global consumer marketing for Lenovo.
As the worldwide PC market grows, computer-manufacturers across the world are trying to keep their hold. Lenovo’s new products will compete with Hewlett-Packard’s Pavilion entertainment notebooks and Dell’s XPS line. The company is hoping that the design, VeriFace Face Recognition software (which allows the users to use their own face as the password) and Dolby Home Theater system will help its notebooks gain an edge over the rivals.
According to IDC, the consumer PC market worldwide is expected to expand at an average of nearly 10 percent each year through 2011.
