SanDisk introduces USB drive with online backing

SanDisk Corp. Wednesday introduced Cruzer Titanium Plus, a 4GB USB flash drive that automatically copies files to an online backup service when plugged into any PC with an Internet connection. In case of a lost, forgotten or stolen computer drive, the files may be recovered from any computer that has a viable net connection.

Cruzer Plus is designed to protect users against accidentally deleting important files, such as documents, photos, music, video, spreadsheets, or work presentations, SanDisk said. Backed-up files can be recovered by signing into the backup account.

Hezy Rotman, VP and general manager of SanDisk's USB division said, “We believe Cruzer Titanium Plus will encourage people to use flash drives for storing important data, not just transferring files from one computer to another.”

Priced at $59.99 with 4GB of memory, the service will be made available in March, said the Milpitas, Calif.-based company. It is the first USB drive with backup capabilities by SanDisk and is to be featured in Las Vegas at International Consumer Electronics Show from Jan 7-10.

The service allows Windows 2000-, XP-, and Vista-based Cruzer Titanium Plus users to sync files whenever the USB drive is plugged in to an internet connected PC. Once you open a personal, password-protected account, all files copied to the drive from a computer are automatically backed up online. In case the computer is offline, the files will be backed up the next time the drive is plugged into an Internet-connected machine.

A Company Spokesman said that the service will be free for the first six months, after which a subscription fee of $29.99 per year will apply. Files that are deleted from the drive may be kept for up to 30 days, or until the BeInSync 4GB backup capacity has been reached.
