Only within 74 days of its launch, the Apple iPhone has reached the milestone of selling 1 million units. Last week, Steve Jobs announced that after the steep price cut, the target of selling 1 million devices should be achieved by September end but this is just the beginning(pun intended).
According to the Apple officials, the one million numbers is inclusive of the phones shipped to AT&T, from which the exact number of units that effectively were sold to the customers is unknown. In other words, the actual number of iPhone owners may not have touched 1 million.
The sale of a million units this soon doesn’t come as a surprise considering the kind of welcome it received. More than 270,000 iPhones were sold in the first 30 hours after its US release on June 29.
Apple’s previous revolutionary device, iPod was far from such success. “One million iPhones in 74 days - it took almost two years to achieve this milestone with the iPod,” said Steve Jobs, Apple's CEO. “We can't wait to get this revolutionary product into the hands of even more customers this holiday season.”
The company is thoroughly aiming to expand its iPhone splash as it recently announced steep price cuts in the device to lure customers ahead of the holiday season.
“iPhone is a breakthrough product, and we have the chance to 'go for it' this holiday season” Jobs had said, while declaring that the 8GB iPhone will be retailed at $399 instead of $599.
By bringing in the iPhone, Apple established that, even though its expertise is connected to other domains, it is capable of producing a cell phone that would revolutionize the market. Such approach enables the company to follow bigger objectives.
Steve Jobs, way back in January proclaimed that Apple is aiming to sell 10 million iPhones by the end of 2008. Pre-holiday price cuts seem to be a step towards that goal. With smart marketing strategies and the kind of launch it made, nobody should question if the iPhone will soon cross the 10 million mark.
