Sony announces more PS3 titles to boost sales

The Japanese game giant, Sony Corp., on Thursday announced its plans to launch at least 380 new game titles for its PlayStation 3 gaming console, a move to boost up the sales of its next-generation console which is continuously losing its market share to Nintendo company’s wildly popular gaming console, Wii.

PS3 is Sony Computer Entertainment's third video game console and the successor to the 7-year-old PlayStation 2. It competes with Xbox 360 and Wii as part of the seventh generation of video game consoles.

Speaking at the annual shareholders' meeting in Tokyo on Thursday, Sony Chief Executive Howard Stringer said the new PlayStation 3 games are expected to hit the worldwide market this fiscal year.

The new gaming titles will compliment PS3’s current catalogue of 150 games, including online titles.

“We are increasing the number of games this year and proceeding with reduction of hardware costs'' to turn the business again lucrative, CEO Stringer said. “PlayStation 3 is important for Sony's future and we intend to make it a success.”

This year in March, Sony announced its plans to soon do away with a key microchip from the European version of its PlayStation 3 (PS3) game console, which will help cut down on production costs and also reduce its compatibility with older generation games.

Stringer, the first non-Japanese to head Sony, also said that Sony's integrated and global approach to electronics, games and entertainment made it a "dominant company" in the digital age. "We will shift Sony from recovery to profitable growth," Stringer said to about 7,000 shareholders in the meeting.

Launched on November 17, 2006 in North America in two different configurations, a $600 Premium model with a 60GB hard drive and a $500 Basic version with a 20GB hard drive, Sony’s PlayStation 3 gaming device faces fierce competition from rival video game consoles including Nintendo's Wii and Microsoft's Xbox 360, which both have a much lower price tag.

Both Basic and Premium PS3 models have much of the same hardware inside. Besides the higher hard drive capacity what makes the 60GB console superior are built-in wireless support, slots for memory sticks and other storage media.

Sony has enjoyed an iron grip on the video game console market with its two previous PlayStation models, PlayStation (1994) and PlayStation 2 (2000). The combined units sold for the two models recorded a high of over 200 million units globally.

Sony, Microsoft and Nintendo, the three companies are locked in a fierce battle for dominance in the $13 billion U.S. video game market, and for the moment, Sony is lagging behind both of its competitors in terms of sales. Among the trio of next generation gaming consoles, Nintendo has emerged as the numero uno in sales.

According to latest sales results provided by NPD, US gamers bought 360,000 units of the wii console in April, making it the best-selling video game console in the country.

The more-powerful systems, Sony’s PlayStation 3 and Microsoft’s Xbox 360 lagged behind in the fierce battle for dominance in the booming gaming consoles market by moving 82,000 and 174,000 units, respectively.

Nintendo sold 436,000 Wii video game consoles in January, while Xbox 360 sold 294,000 and Sony's PlayStation 3 sold 244,000 units. In February, US gamers bought 335,000 Wii consoles and 228,000 of Microsoft's Xbox 360, while Sony's PlayStation 3 consoles managed 127,000 units. In March, Nintendo shipped 259,000 Wii video game consoles, while Microsoft and Sony managed 199,000 and 130,000 units, respectively.

The world's biggest maker of video-game consoles, Sony is also a leading manufacturer of electronics, video, communications and information technology products for the consumer and professional markets.

Sony shares fell 100 yen, or 1.5 percent, to 6,520 yen on Thursday in the Tokyo Stock Exchange.

PS3 and XBox 360 over priced and overhyped

The Wii took a formula that is as old as the video game system. Make a system that people want to play and the games will come. Sony and Microsoft decided that the hardcore gamers could move a market. This was a failure yet Microsoft decided try it again. Somehow Sony decided this was a good idea also. Don't get me wrong hardcore gamers can create a lot of buzz and they are a large force on the internet. However like snakes on a plane they promised more then they can deliver. I am a medium core PC gamer. I love my mouse and keyboard combination. It serves me well for FPS, MMORPG, and RTS but it can never replace a joystick for the type of gaming I like on a console. Football, basketball, platformers and racing are just better on the consoles. Along comes microsoft trying to fill thier pockets up by moving FPS to a console along with every other genre that works best on a PC. Hardcore gamers hailed the begining of their console takeover. But no one came, they flocked to the PS2 to the tune of 120 Million. Did Nintendo do the same. No they made the mistake of trying to appeal to the core Nintendo gamer. Well the core Nintendo gamer wanted to play games their friends were playing. How did Nintendo respond? They got greedy and cut out the third party companies. Then to no ones surprise but Nintendo's people stopped buying and playing the Gamecube and purchased the PS2. So why is Nintendo selling more then the other two? Because they didn't market the games, they didn't build a three headed beast to replace what everyone already has in the home; a PC, DVR with movie rentals and on demand. They simply built a gaming system and marketed the system as something that was simply fun. For $50 more I could have had a XBox 360 core. Why bother, its not fun, it plays halo and Gears of war. That is the message that Microsoft gave off. It plays hardcore games. Well Microsoft and Sony I have a hardcore gaming system. Its called a PC and I can upgrade without having to buy a new system. If I want a minimum upgrade and a black case it won't cost me $479. When I do buy a new one it can play all my old software. As for Nintendo, great move. I have games from you and games from third party companies that really don't translate well to the PC. Games that are really only fun on a console. I even have games that would fit well on my computer that I buy for the Wii. I just love the Wii remote. Gaming on a console that's fun and cheap with a new control system. What a concept. Isn't this what we all really wanted anyway?

PS3 = Overrated and Overhyped and badly marketed

The PS3 is going to make Coca-Cola's "new coke" campaign look brilliant if your definition of brilliance is sugar vomit. The vision is simple for nintendo: search for new gamers in untapped markets and not covet an existing niched market, which in this case to what Sony and Microsoft are doing, is to fight for the "hardcore gamer" market. I was once a hardcore gamer... but then I had a career. Sad but true.

The wii outsells the ps3 up to 5 units to 1. If sony continues to market their ps3 games by horrible marketing campaigns like sacrificing goats or grafitti campaigns at metropolitan areas, then it's time for Sony Computer Entertainment for a serious reorganization across the board. Otherwise, I'm going to enjoy watching youtube on the wii, play sports (using their motion sensors and not button mashing), pokemon DS wifi fighting on the wii, and share my mii to my friends. Of course the ps3 has crisper graphics, but it's not that different than the xbox 360 graphics. So much for Sony's convincing of the consumer their brand is the best in consumer entertainment.

Nintendo, Like Apple, it had to reorganize from doom to become the ingenuity of innovation. I'm beating myself up with my keyboard now for not buying nintendo stock. Boo me.

That's a lot of products

That's a lot of products trying to cover dev costs on a platform no one really wants to own. PS3 has a weenie user base. Lots of businesses loosing money on PS3 - I guess that explains why there is so much news about publishers moving their titles across to Wii and Xbox 360.
