Britain's admit ignorance about food

London -- A survey done by Britain's Linking Environment and Farming charity has revealed nearly 25 percent of adults don't know where bacon and sausages come from.

The survey was given to 1,700 adults and teens in both London and Manchester, the Daily Mail reported Friday.

About 22 percent of the survey's respondents were in disbelief when told that sausages and bacon began life on British working farms.

The numbers rose to about 34 percent among 16- to 24-year-olds, said the charity, which commissioned the survey.

Also, about 29 percent of the adults said they never had set foot on a working farm and the numbers rose to 42 percent in the 16- to 24-year-old category.

"More than half the food consumed in the UK is produced on British farms yet the public, and especially young people, are unable to make this connection," said Britain's National Farmers' Union president Peter Kendall.
