She was one of three of the top four seeded players to fail to advance through Tuesday's matches but her loss was perhaps the most surprising. Qualifier Maria Emilia Salerni rolled to the 6-2, 7-5 upset of Mirza. Third-seeded Virginie Razzano withdrew because of a hip inflammation with her match with Milagros Sequera tied 3-6, 7-6 (9-7). No. 4 Anastassia Rodionova was beaten 7-5, 7-5 by Julie Ditty. Seeded players who managed to get to the second round were fifth-seeded Jill Craybas, who stopped Yulia Beygelzimer 6-4, 6-1; No. 7 Camille Pin, who topped Stephanie Dubois 6-1, 6-4; and eighth-seeded Anne Kremer, who romped past Fatima Zahrae El Allami 6-0, 6-2. Also winning first-round matches Tuesday were Youlia Fedossova, Sandra Kloesel, Aleksandra Wozniak, Ioana Raluca Olaru, Caroline Wozniacki, Timea Bacsinszky and Neha Uberoi.
