Wolfowitz future in doubt at World Bank
Washington -- The World Bank executive board this week may consider a vote of no confidence in its president, Paul D. Wolfowitz, it was reported Saturday.
Wolfowitz has been invited to appear before the board Tuesday and the vote could come soon after, the Washington Post reported.
The bank's executive board concluded Wolfowitz violated ethics rules in arranging a pay raise for his girlfriend, Shaha Riza.
The board wants to convince Wolfowitz to resign rather than fire him directly and provoke more tension with the United States, which is the bank's largest shareholder, the Post said.
Wolfowitz declined through his lawyer to say what he would do if the board votes against him.
Board members hope a vote of no confidence would persuade the Bush administration to urge Wolfowitz to resign, ending the leadership crisis that has engulfed the bank for nearly two months.
