Microsoft releases long-awaited Xbox 360 Spring Update

Microsoft on Wednesday launched the much anticipated Spring update for Xbox 360, making it available to all Xbox users for download.

Besides several other new features, the Xbox 360 Spring Update includes Windows Live Messenger, a feature that will allow gamers to communicate with their instant messaging contacts from within the Xbox.

After announcing the HDMI-enabled Xbox 360 Elite game console and new HD content offerings on Xbox LIVE, Microsoft, last month, announced its plan to include Windows Live Messenger on Xbox 360, as part of its efforts to make Windows ubiquitous.

This update to Xbox 360 connects the worlds of Windows and Xbox 360 by connecting people using Microsoft Windows-based PCs and Windows Mobile-powered devices with those using company’s Xbox 360 consoles.

Under the update, Windows Live Messenger will enable Xbox 360 users to text chat with up to six people using the virtual keyboard, while playing games, listening to music, or watching movies.

"Bringing the largest IM community in the world, Windows Live Messenger, to Xbox 360 makes sense, as Xbox Live has really become the largest social network on television," said Johnson, a Product Unit Manager of Xbox Live at Microsoft.

The Spring Update also includes some other interesting features, including a richer achievement notification pop-up for showcasing the name of the unlocked Achievement, gamerscore value eliminating the need to leave the game for checking the list, enhanced family settings features, etc.

The updates to Xbox Live Arcade allow players to have a quick glance at what their friends are playing, and join in the fun.

"We are simultaneously expanding access of Xbox Live users to existing friends and family, while introducing Windows Live Messenger users to the benefits of Xbox 360," said Johnson.

Although the instant messaging will support the virtual keyboard and USB keyboards, Microsoft is planning to add a small sized QWERTY-style keyboard featuring 47 keys to its popular gaming console controller so that users can chat easily with their friends. This attachment can be snapped onto the bottom of the controller through the headset jack for thumb typing.

Using keyboard, gamer will be able to view and send messages through a small on-screen overlay, without switching away from a game.

There is also a new addition in the auto downloads edition, which provides faster access to the entire collection of free, trial-version Xbox LIVE Arcade games. In addition, extension of the background download functionality will allow owners to set their Xbox 360 console to turn off automatically after downloads are complete.

Beginning Wednesday, the Spring Update is free and easily accessible to every Xbox 360 owner through Xbox LIVE or on Xbox.com.
