After failing to win the favor of the Superior Court judge Michael Sauer, who imposed 45-day sentence on Paris Hilton, the distressed jail-bound heiress has now urged fans to join her in a desperate plea to California governor Arnold Schwarzenegger, and sign a petition to keep her out of jail.
Judge Sauer sentenced Paris Hilton, the heiress to the Hilton hotel fortune and the daughter of real estate magnate Rick Hilton, to 45 days in jail for violating her probation in a reckless driving case. In his judgment, the judge ruled that the blonde socialite knowingly drove her blue Bentley Continental GTC with a suspended license when she was stopped by Los Angeles County deputies on February 27 for speeding and driving without headlights on.
Testifying in her own defense at the time of hearing four days back, Hilton said she was unaware her license had been suspended. "I'm very sorry and from now on I'm going to pay complete attention to everything. I'm sorry and I did not do it on purpose at all," she told the judge before he imposed the sentence.
But, Judge Sauer rejected Hilton's defence that she didn't realize her license was suspended and ordered the blonde socialite to report to the Century Regional Detention Facility in Lynwood, California on June 5.
Shocked Hilton is now looking up at California Governor Arnold Schwarzenegger to pardon her. In a blog posted on her homepage at social networking website MySpace.com on Tuesday, the 26-year-old high profile celebrity heiress urges her 170,919 "friends" to sign a petition being organized by a supporter calling for the socialite to be spared jail time.
"My friend Joshua started this petition, please help and sihn it. i LOVE YOU ALL!!!!!," Hilton said in a message above a link to the petition. Apparently, desperately looking for her freedom, Hilton misspelled the word "sign" and disregarded grammar.
The petition reads: "She (Paris Whitney Hilton) provides hope for young people all over the US and the world. She provides beauty and excitement to (most of) our otherwise mundane lives. We, the American public who support Paris, are shocked, dismayed and appalled by how Paris has been the person to be used as an example that Drunk Driving is wrong...”
"This petition is to ask Governor Arnold Schwarzenegger to pardon Paris Hilton for her mistake. Please allow her to her return to her career and life."
Kyle Vincent, a 27-year-old artist who described himself as a longtime Hilton fan and believes her story that she was unaware her license had been suspended when she was caught driving without headlights on thinks 45 days in jail is a cruel punishment for the caliber of what Hilton has done.
Vincent has launched a FreeParis.org Web site and is attempting to collect one million signatures on a petition seeking clemency by June 5, the date the hotel heiress is ordered to report to jail.
Hilton's publicist, Elliot Mintz, whom she blamed in court last week for getting her into the mess, but later rehired him, said the petition drive "appears to be legitimate."
However, legal experts say Paris has little chance of escaping jail term. One experienced attorney who specializes in driving under the influence (DUI) cases said: "Her chances of winning an appeal are little to none. The prosecutors had a slam dunk case. The evidence was overwhelming that she repeatedly violated her probation."
Hollywood actor-turned-politician Schwarzenegger's press secretary, Aaron McLear, said the governor had received no formal request to consider a pardon. It would be premature for the governor to insert himself in this battle until the individual has exhausted their judicial remedies, he added.
Even not all of Hilton's MySpace friends are supportive. One post with an embedded link reads, "VOTE if you think Paris Hilton should go to jail!!"
The life of Paris Hilton, labeled as “Party Girl” has been in media spotlight ever since she entered the entertainment industry and has been subjected to criticism for her hard-partying lifestyle by almost everyone.
She is best known for starring in a fish-out-of-water reality show called, "The Simple Life" with a fellow heiress Nicole Richie, daughter of singer Lionel Richie. In November 2003, Hilton came in the headlines when a home video of her cavorting with her then-boyfriend Rick Solomon was published online.
It would be such a huge message to not only the state of California but the entire country that pardoning this young lady would be a such a severe mistake. We all make choices everyday. Doesn't matter who we are or how much money we make, we all have to obey the laws of the land. Miss Hilton has not even a clue what it is like to make a living, know what it is like in the real world. All she seem's to know is party, party, spend, spend, pose, pose, make stupid sex tapes, and she is an embarrassment to our country.
