Nintendo Wii on Winning Spree, beats Xbox 360 and PS3 again

After attaining the number one position in the first two months of the year, Nintendo has again emerged as the numero uno among the trio of next generation gaming consoles in sales after selling 259,000 Wii video game consoles in March, repeatedly outshining both its rivals Microsoft’s Xbox 360 and Sony’s PlayStation 3 in the US video game consoles market.

According to fresh sales results provided by market research firm NPD Group Inc., US gamers bought 259,000 Wii consoles in March, making it the best-selling video game console in the country.

The more-powerful systems PlayStation 3 and Xbox 360 from Sony Corp. and Microsoft Corp. respectively, lagged behind in the fierce battle for dominance in the booming gaming consoles market.

According to NPD research data, Microsoft's Xbox 360 sold 199,000 units in March, while Sony's PlayStation 3 managed 130,000 units.

Among overall consoles, Sony's last-generation PlayStation 2 again has become the leader by selling 280,000 units in March. Sony's this 7-year-old game console moved 299,000 machines in January and 295,000 in February.

Nintendo sold 436,000 Wii video game consoles in January, while Xbox 360 sold 294,000 and Sony's PlayStation 3 sold 244,000 units.

In February, US gamers bought 335,000 Wii consoles and 228,000 of Microsoft's Xbox 360, while Sony's PlayStation 3 consoles managed 127,000 units.

In the hand-held category, sales of the Nintendo DS hit 508,000 in March, ahead of Sony's PlayStation Portable, or PSP, with 180,000. Nintendo DS is a portable game player that is still selling briskly more than two years after its introduction. Nintendo has shipped 36 million DS units world-wide compared with Sony's 25 million PSPs.

Nintendo’s soaring sales raised the first-quarter total for the console to 1.03 million. Microsoft sold overall 721,000 Xbox 360 players in the quarter, while Sony moved 501,000 PlayStation 3 units, NPD said. The PS2 was the leading console in the last generation with lifetime unit sales of 38 million in the United States.

After observing the fresh NPD sales data, it seems that consumers still reacting well to lower cost consoles. Launched in November last year, Nintendo’s Wii console retails for $US250, while PS2 costs only $129.

Xbox 360 and the PS3 start at $299 and $599, respectively, while their high-end versions are priced at $US400 and $US600, respectively.

Besides Nintendo console's U.S. price, which is just half the cost of the least-expensive version of PS3, its motion-sensitive controller that has been popular with mainstream gamers as well as new audiences like senior citizens and very young children has helped build buzz for the machine, and made it more appealing to some consumers.

According to market research firm, NPD, the soaring sales of Nintendo Co.'s Wii console propelled U.S. sales of video-game consoles, helping to double first-quarter shipments for the industry.

Sales of consoles and portable players rose from $659 million to $1.3 billion in the three months ended March 31, said NPD, while the sales of video games rose 54 percent to $3.3 billion in the same quarter.

Nintendo’s innovative gaming unit also boasts of four of the top 10 best selling game titles in the quarter. The top-selling title this year is Sony's “God of War II” for PS2, which sold 833,000 units, while Nintendo's “Wii Play” was second with 644,000 units.

I bet on xbox 360...

There are at least 10 xbox 360 games for the next 6 months that i'm going to buy... i have a Wii too, and there's not even one Wii game that deserves my attention.... so... Wii for casuals, 360 for hardcores.

PS3? what's that... lol

Lead?

Its hard to say that the Wii is in the lead of the next gen console war. I still consider it to be a 6th generation console, running at less then a 3rd of the processing power of both the ps3 and 360. A next generation console isnt simply one that is released after the generation before it. The Wii was launced alongside the 7th generation consoles 360 and PS3 but is in fact still a 6th generation console.

Im amazed at the great job the guys at Nintendo have done. I wonder if they aimed for the elderly crowd before hand or if that just happend. They have managed to make a console that is really cheap, well priced, with good enough games. The buzz and sales of the Wii consoles are attracting alot of attention from game studios, not only because its alot cheaper to make games for the Wii, but their user base is expanding rapidly, leaving the more expensive and time consuming game development for both the 360 and PS3 a bit behind.

Im not a Microsoft fan but I am an xbox fan, mostly because of Halo and xbox live. I have been rooting for the 360 and thought they would have an easier time against the competition, but their are sort of getting caught in the middle of two camps. The PS3 is more powerful, came with 1080p capability at launch, a next gen Blu-Ray player, and their sixaxes controler, not too mention their huge user base (PS2) crossing the 100 million mark now. It would have been nice if they would have launched a machine similar to the Elite. I think they have to start pushing a bit more info on their platform integration to pull a larger market share. That being said, Vista needs to get its driver integration together, and help pull all microsofts products and services together.

I wasn't even aware that the

I wasn't even aware that the Wii was a direct competitor with the 360 and PS3. The 360 and PS3 don't appear concerned with the 8- to 40+ year old category and the Wii doesn't seem to be interested in the hardcore gamer demographic. Nintendo has done a great job hyping their system though and you still can't find units on store shelves. However once I got past the 5min thrill of waving my hands at the screen and played through the only decent game for the system, Zelda, I realized there aren't any other games for the system that weren't extremely shallow and beatable in 30min to 2hrs. Nintendo still does not have much 3rd party game support or online multiplay but it doesn't seem to matter if Nintendo can make sure everyone, including news articles, keeps talking about the "innovative controller" and how amazing the system is despite not having any games or features. As long as Nintendo keeps trickling units to the market they will continue to create a fake marketing craze but the craze will have to fade sometime and N will have to start backing up their system with some solid titles. It will be interesting to see how the Wii does down the long stretch without gaining a significant chunk of the big money spending hardcore gamer demographic. I am skeptical that after an initial system purchase that the Wii's demographic will continue spending money on many games down the road. As of right now the 360 has one of the most impressive games purchased to system averages and the ever growing 3rd party support reflects that.

I think this is great

Finally, Sony is no longer the dominant one in the video game market. I had predicted before the PS3 and Wii came out that Nintendo's system would prevail. Sony has been dominant for several, several years. Its nice to see Nintendo finally back at number one. I think this trend will continue as long as nintendo releases a lot of killer apps, i think they will lead all year and into the holiday season
