Samsung Electronics, which was the first company to introduce the Blu-ray Disc format and has been among its greatest supporters since its launch last year, has now announced its plans to navigate into a new arena with the release of an optical disc player that will play both Blu-ray Disc and HD DVD format.

Sounds like packing two rivals together? The "Duo HD" player (BD-UP5000) will also support both next-generation formats' interactive technologies, HDi and BD-Java.

The Korean consumer electronics manufacturer insists that on popular demand, the marketing of a standalone HD DVD player may also considered.

"Our main concern is not technology but consumer choice," said Dongsoo Jun, executive VP of the Digital AV Division at Samsung Electronics. "Consumers are hungry for more HD content but are currently confused about competing formats. Samsung's Duo HD player will allow consumers’ access to every HD movie title available regardless of the authoring format. Samsung is committed to making life simpler through technology and will market next-generation DVD products which will satisfy the consumer and market requirement."

After LG Electronics, which launched a dual player in North America earlier this year, Samsung becomes the second company to adopt the idea.

These players will enable the users to enjoy additional studio content including trailers, director’s comments, more elaborate interactive menus and behind the scenes footage.

Warner and Paramount are the only two studios that support both HD DVD and Blu-ray formats while Universal studio supports only the former. Ron Sanders, president of Warner Home Video stated that dual players will help reduce consumers’ confusion and the tentativeness of buyers toward HD media. The Blu-ray software has been outselling HD DVD for quite sometime now.

Along with the announcement of Samsung’s dual player came the report of a drop in the company’s profit for a second consecutive quarter mainly owing to the declining prices for its mainstay computer chips.
