Dos & Don’ts for traveling overseas

Be it for business or pleasure, traveling overseas is one opportunity that most of us would jump at. With travel companies bringing up exhilarating offers and our border lines blurring, traveling overseas has become more comfortable than ever before. While en route or on arriving at your destination, some Dos and Don’ts if considered will make your experience pleasant and safe.

Dos

- Keep your signed, valid passport and visas handy.
- Leave a copy of your passport identification page at home with friends or relatives and also carry one with you, placed separate from your passport. In case you passport is lost or stolen this will facilitate replacement.
- Make sure you fill the emergency information page of your passport before you leave.
- Acquaint yourself with the climate, crime rate and terrorist activity of the place you are to visit. Also, while in a foreign country, you are subject to its laws so familiarize yourself with local laws and customs.
- Learn how to ask for help in the native language of the country you visit.
- A copy of your itinerary should be left with family or friends at home so that you can be contacted in case of an emergency.
- Learn about the foreign currency before using it.
- Read the Consular Information Sheets (and Public Announcements or Travel Warnings, if applicable) for the countries you plan to visit.
- Before your departure register with the nearest embassy or consulate to make you presence and whereabouts known in case there is an emergency and it is necessary to contact you.
- Store business cards and corporate identification in your luggage while traveling.
- In case you luggage gets stolen the security of your home might be compromised with the address it carries. To avoid that use business address on luggage tags.
- Carry your passport at all times but keep one copy locked in your hotel room.

Don’ts

- Do not leave your luggage unattended in public areas.
- Never accept packages from strangers.
- Avoid wearing conspicuous clothing and expensive jewelry, since these identify you as a target for theft or worse.
- Do not deal with unauthorized agents when you exchange money or purchase art or antiques.
- Do not travel with large amounts of cash. Also, avoid carrying more credit cards than you actually need.
- Try not to carry valuables. If you must, do not leave them unattended. Make sure they are locked in the hotel safe when not in use.

With adequate preparation and some precautions, your experience of international travel can become pleasant and much safer. So as you pack you bags ponder upon these and get set for a great trip.
