Rapper Snoop Dogg’s latest brush with law
Rap artist, record producer and actor from the United States, Calvin Broadus better known as Snoop Dogg was arrested at the California airport yesterday on charges of illegal drug and gun possession, report Burbank Police Department.
The 35 year old rapper was arrested at about 7 p.m. (ET) by airport police at the Bob Hope Airport in Burbank, California.
Being parked in passenger loading and unloading zone, Dogg was initially charged with traffic violation offence. But further search and investigation revealed him to be in possession of a gun and marijuana, revealed police authorities.
Posting a bail amount of $35,000, the rapper was released. He is now scheduled to appear at the Burbank Superior Court on December 12.
Known for his “lazy drawl”—a slurred, distinctively calm, laid-back, and rhythmically-complex lyrical delivery, Dogg has sold over 17 million records and acted in movies like ‘Starsky & Hutch’, ‘Old School’, ‘Training Day’ and ‘Bones’.
Obsessed with Charlie Brown’s cartoon ‘Snoopy’, he was nicknamed the same by his mother. He then took up the stage name Snoop Doggy Dogg when he began recording. However, he changed his name to Snoop Dogg in 1996.
His widely used and most popular catch phrase "Fo shizzle, ma nizzle", meaning, "For sure, my nigga" has nominated him for the prestigious Grammy Awards eight times, though he is yet to win one.
Dogg made his debut with album Doggystyle in November 1993. The song ‘Who Am I (What's My Name)’ ranked No.1 in the US Billboard 200. In U.S. alone the album sold a whooping 5,600,000 copies.
Snoop Dogg's artistic style has veered away from hardcore gangsta rap. He has made several film appearances, in addition to producing and directing music videos both for himself and other artists. He also released his autobiography in 2001.
For the distinguished star, this is not the first brush with law. He has been charged and convicted on numerous other occasions.
In 1990, Dogg was convicted of narcotics possession charge. Three years later, in 1993 he was charged with gun possession. He was then acquitted of murder in 1996 when an alleged gang member was killed by gunfire from the vehicle Dogg was travelling in.
In April this year, the rapper and several crew members were detained by police at London's Heathrow Airport after a scuffle that left seven police officers with minor injuries.
Lately, he was found in possession of a 53-centimetre collapsible baton in his bag as he boarded a New York-bound flight from John Wayne International Airport.
About the latest run-in with law, the rapper’s lawyer Donald Etra said, “There was no basis for this arrest. We believe that once this is cleared up, all charges will be dismissed."
Criminal Profiling of Your Typical Rapper
It's about time law enforcement cracked down on the violence, flagrant disregard for the law (and thus, others' safety) and other abuses these hoodlums dispense unto society. These are the people we should be sending to Iraq, to die from enemy gunfire. Instead, they roan around our country, shooting at each other (with very poor aim, I might add) and killing innocent bystanders in the process. That is, when they're not sleeping with underage girls (and boys).
