Kidman’s hubby Keith Urban, a New Zealander-Australian country music singer, checked himself into a rehabilitation center for alcohol abuse on October 19, 2006.
He issued a press release about addressing his challenge, noting his gratitude for the "support and the unwavering strength of my wife, family and friends" and adding that he felt "calm and optimistic about the future and with finally coming to terms with the reality of my condition”.
"I deeply regret the hurt this has caused Nicole and the ones that love and support me," the singer said.
The 38 year old artist, who won a 2005 Grammy Award for his hit ‘You'll Think of Me’, did not reveal the location of the centre or the nature of his treatment.
He has admitted of having being addicted to cocaine and alcohol since long.
"One can never let one's guard down on recovery and I'm afraid that I have," Urban said. "With the strength and unwavering support I am blessed to have from my wife, family and friends, I am determined and resolved to a positive outcome."
Urban's uncle, Paul Urban, said he heard the news on the radio. "It was a bloody shock.” He added that he was not aware of Urban’s substance abuse problem.
"It's all second and third-hand, out of newspapers and women's magazines. It's their business, I've learned over the years that everything is played very close to the chest."
Keith Urban, born in Whangarei, North Island, New Zealand, started his career early in life and at an age of fifteen, he embarked on the journey of singing. He recorded his first solo album in 1990 and in 1992, he moved to Nashville to pursue the largest country music market in the world.
Urban has been battling cocaine addiction since late 1990’s. After reaching a personal nadir in 1998, he got determined to give up the habit and checked into a rehab. After cleaning up, Urban released his self titled American debut in 2000 which produced three top 5 hits and secured for him the Top New Male Vocalist Award at the 2001 Academy of Country Music Awards.
Beating the 62 year history of Billboard's country charts, Urban made history on August 21, 2006, when his new single ‘Once in a Lifetime’ became the highest debuting country single.
Before getting hooked with Kidman, Urban has dated veterinary technician Laura Sigler for 8 years and former supermodel Niki Taylor for 3 years.
It seems all Hollywood stars are getting sucked into drug and alcohol abuse slowly and gradually, frequenting the rehabs more than the night clubs. On September 19, 2006, Willie Nelson landed himself in hot soup due to the possession of weed.
Singer Bobby Brown had checked himself into the Betty Ford Clinic to battle drug and alcohol problems in 1995. In 2002, he was captured by the police for marijuana possession and driving without a license after a routine stop for speeding.
More recently, the photojournalist claiming to be the father of Anna Nicole Smith's baby daughter, alleged in court documents that Smith was taking methadone and is hiding out in the Bahamas to keep her baby from being tested for drugs. The lawsuit alleges Smith was taking methadone, which is normally used to treat heroin addiction, and that Stern has been facilitating her habit.
Even George Michael has admitted to having problems and depression, which he has tried to cope with by taking Prozac and smoking pot.
On 26 February, 2006, Michael was arrested for possession of Class C drugs. In the early hours of October 1, 2006, Michael was found unconscious in his car. He was taken to the Hospital for checks, and was then booked in at Colindale police station. He was later cautioned by the police for possession of cannabis, and was released on bail pending further inquiries on his fitness to drive.
Michael's long term partner Kenny Goss has also been treated for alcohol abuse, checking into an Arizona based clinic for two months in June 2004 after encouragement from Michael.
Teen movie queen Lindsay Lohan admitted using drugs in January 2006, blaming her demise on her destructive relationship with her father Michael Lohan, the stress of life in Hollywood and the trauma of her split from first love Wilmer Valderrama.
Drugs have been consumed by Hollywood personalities for a long time and remains one of the most widely and commonly used illicit substances.
