Owens refutes attempt to suicide
The Dallas Police station issued a statement claiming that the NFL star Terrell Owens had attempted suicide. Hours later the statement was backtracked, further creating confusion as to what the reality looks like.
Dallas Cowboys receiver Terrell Owens denied claims that he was hospitalized as a result of a suicide attempt, hours after the release of a police report saying he tried to overdose on pain medication.
"It is my understanding there was some information released prior to me speaking to the media and what I want to say is that information that went out. We are the official spokespersons for the Dallas Police Department. How that information got out I don't know", says Dallas Police Lt. Rick Watson.
The star while addressing a packed news conference said he denied attempting suicide. "There was no suicide attempt,'' he said." The rumour of me taking 35 pills, that was absurd.'' He added further. "It's very unfortunate for it to go from an allergic reaction to a suicide attempt,'' he said.
Owens, who is currently sidelined by a broken bone in his right hand, said he took "two or three" extra pills of the prescription painkiller hydrocodone in combination with a mixture of other "natural supplements" he takes as part of his routine.
He was transported from his home to Baylor Hospital on Tuesday evening after his publicist placed a 911 call because he was unresponsive after taking several pills. Owens, who signed a three-year, US$25-million contract with Dallas before this season, also denied suggestions that he was depressed and he had 25 million reasons to stay on this planet.
But obviously the situation in not crystal clear by any standards. The police report says that a friend, who is not named in the report, "noticed that (his) prescription pain medication was empty and observed (Owens) putting two pills in his mouth," Rescue workers asked Owens "if he was attempting to harm himself, at which time (he) stated, `Yes.'
Owens, one of the league's top receivers during his 11-year NFL career, is best known for his wild stunts on the field and other publicity-seeking antics off it. Having a roller coaster life from the time he started his carrier, Owens is certainly one of the guys everyone love to hate!
