Lamborghini ride lands 50 Cent in trouble
New York -- Driving his silver, open-topped Lamborghini and generating a crowd that cheered him, Rapper 50 Cent got arrested in midtown Manhattan by New York Police on Friday. The popular rap star, actually named Curtis Jackson is now facing multiple motor vehicle violations.
The 31-year-old rapper was taken to a nearby police station after he was pulled over outside the New Yorker Hotel at 34th street and the corner of 8th Avenue. He had been given four summons - for driving with an expired permit, driving an unregistered vehicle, driving without insurance and for an unsafe lane change.
Ian Parvess, a tourist, who videotaped the arrest said, “At first he refused a police order to get out of the car, instead started making a call on his cell phone but eventually the cops opened the door. ... He just got out of the car and put his hands on the car and they put the cuffs on him.”
A sizeable audience had gathered around the spot of arrest and many booed the police officers for arresting the singer who was later released on his own recognizance.
New York-born Jackson, who took the name '50 Cent' after that of a fabled Brooklyn thief, was heading north on Eighth Avenue and had to call his friend to bail him out of the situation. The car did belong to the rapper was later confirmed by the same friend who also escorted him away from the police station.
The tattooed king of hip-hop is the first singer after the Beatles to have four tracks in the top ten list of the Billboard Hot 100 charts. He was raised to fame following the success of his album and subsequent movie ‘Get Rich or Die Tryin’ and another album ‘The Massacre’. He achieved multi-platinum success, selling around 22 million albums worldwide.
