Market closes with boost

Mumbai -- After registering the positive bias in the opening and then witnessing the ups and downs the market at last closed on a strong note with benchmark Sensex gaining 44 points after touching an intra-day high of 11940.58 and low of 11825.22 to close at 11918. NSE Nifty gained 16 points to close at 3471. Auto, FMCG and Metal stocks were the major gainers.

Fall in crude oil prices, and a recovery across the major Asian Indices stirred the sentiments of the investors. Crude oil prices dropped by 18 cents to settle at $67.32 a barrel in New York.

Pharma stocks were trading with smart gains on back of fresh buying. Ranbaxy has surged by 1.6% to Rs. 416, Wockhardt is up by 1.6% to Rs. 409, Cipla has added 1% to Rs. 256, Pfizer has advanced by 1.9% to Rs. 913 and Dr Reddy’s Labs has surged by 0.4% to Rs. 730.

Selling pressure was witnessed in the mid cap banks. Bank of India dragged by 1% to Rs. 140, Corp Bank was down 1.5% to Rs. 318, Canara Bank lost 0.7% to Rs. 248 and ICICI Bank plunged by 0.2% to Rs. 606.

Technology stocks has also witnessed profit booking. Infosys lost 1% to Rs. 1789, Wipro slipped 0.8% to Rs. 508, I-Flex dipped 0.93% to Rs. 1440 and Rolta is down by 0.6% to Rs. 220.
