Television has become such a major part of everybody’s household that people have started building their lives around their favourite shows.

People prefer watching shows in which no one knows the consequences. Emmy Awards, hosted by The Academy of Television Arts and Sciences is one such show, which glues most of us to television sets.

An Emmy can supercharge an actor’s career three folds or cause a show’s rating to rocket.

The 58th Emmy Awards, held Sunday evening in Los Angeles, saw the drama series ‘24’ win three Emmy’s after vying in the top drama category for five consecutive years.

‘The Office’, an adaptation from the British Television that mocks at the politics, won the best comedy serial and actor Kiefer Sutherland, who plays counterterrorism agent Jack Bauer, was seen accepting the Emmy for best actor in drama series.

Shalhoub's won accolades again in the award function after accepting his third acting Emmy for the ‘Monk’, a detective series, where he plays the role of a neurotic former police officer-turned private investigator.

‘Elizabeth 1’ actress Helen Mirren earned an Emmy for best actress in the mini series. Whereas, Jeremy Irons, her co-star, was named the best supporting actor. The pretty actress was seen thanking the writers for giving a substantial role to her.

She said that it feels great to see substantive roles carved by writers especially for women and strongly beliefs that many more splendid performances by women are waiting to be revealed by some great writing.

The three cancelled shows, ‘West Wing’, ‘Will and Grace’ and ‘Huff’ also won appreciation when the stars of their show were seen accepting awards.

Alan Alda fetched an award for ‘West Wing’, a political drama, by getting the award for the best supportive actor. Megan Mullally was honored her supporting role in the comedy ‘Will and Grace’. Blythe Danner won the Emmy for best supporting actress for the drama series ‘Huff’.

The long time host Dick Clark, who is recovering from a stroke that he suffered in 2004 was also paid a tribute by The Academy of Television Arts and Sciences.

Worked in nearly every part of the entertainment business, including comedy, drama, game and talk shows and reality television, his career goes back to 1950’s, when he presented the show ‘Bandstand’. It then became a hit national show called ‘American Bandstand’ and since then, there was no looking back for the talented Clark.

After receiving the tribute, Clark was much elated and said that his childhood dream has manifested into reality. He hopes that everybody in the entertainment business be as lucky as him.

The host for the evening was Comic and late-night talk show host Conan O'Brien. However, in the best host category he lost to Jon Stewart, who hosts ‘The Daily Show With Jon Stewart’ on the cable network Comedy Central.
