Fans worried at PS3 production delayby Samia Sehgal - August 22, 2006 - 4 comments
Edited on Wed,Aug 23,2006 AT 9:44 am Sony Computers American president, Kaz Hirai said in an interview with Gamespot, “I think that we’ve always talked about shipping 2 million units worldwide within the calendar year. Since we’re going with three territories, we really haven’t come up with an allocation just yet. But even if you do the simple math, you’re talking about less than 700,000 units per territory, per major territory, between launch and the end of the year.” Hirai in stating so made a blunder but Sony’s PR staff stepped in to undo it. Giving a more optimistic version of the events, a Sony Computers spokesperson said, “Unfortunately Kaz Hirai's comments in the recent GameSpot interview regarding PlayStation 3 production were misunderstood. We are still on schedule to ship 2 million units for our mid-November 2006 launch and additional 2 million units by the end of the year for a total of 4 million units.” The much-awaited launch has been declared to be made on the 17th of November. Hirai also stated much to the distress of fans that the manufacture of PS3 is not yet initiated. This is another substandard news for the eager fans as not even three months are left in the schedule of shipping the multimedia device. “I might be a little worried because I thought they started at least a month or two ago. But to not have started yet? This is definitely some bad news. I mean I have all my faith with Sony, but they need to get on the ball here. This is crunch time.” A displeased fan said. Another young man who seemed thorough with his calculations quoted, “They must have a lot of people in a huge factory...to pump out an assembled PS3 in 4 sec means there must be many people assembling many PS3s on many assembly lines.” “Why should we care? They said November 17th right?” said a hopeful individual. And I completely agree with him. Let’s just wait and watch while Sony gets into action. ( Tags: Manufacturing )

If you're worried about them having to make a PS3 every 4 seconds, just look at Sony's history over the last 12 years. 100+ million PS1's in 6 years, 100+ million PS2's in 6 years. That's a bit less than 2 seconds per PS1 and PS2. I'm sure Sony knows what they're doing. I mean, they do have multiple companies working on constructing them. Xbox 360 started production less than two months before ship so they're still ahead of the game. Post new comment |
