Bangalore to have a new Medical college
Bangalore -- Karnatka Government is all set to start a new medical college in Bangalore on a 70 acre plot on the Magadi road, in addition to the government run Bangalore Medical College.
The college will start with its classes from the next academic year. On Wednesday, Chief Minister, H D Kumaraswamy said that the college is being started with solely one objective in mind i.e. to help poor children pursue a career in the medical field.
He informed that the aim of the government behind setting up another medical college was to facilitate the growth of poor students in the medical field and aid them with all the necessary facilities. The meritable students are also targeted for this college.
The college, which will be affiliated with the Rajiv Gandhi University of Health Sciences, will be built on 70 acres plot, although, according to the norms of the Medical council of India, 25 acres of land is sufficient for the college.
The preliminary cost of the proposed medical college was put at Rs. 100 crore. The college would come up at Beggars' Colony on Magadi Road.
The city, well equipped with the entire necessary infrastructure, hospitals and staff, doesn’t want to miss out the rural area and this is the main reason for having another Medical college.
The meeting for setting up of the college was held between Minister for Medical Education V.S. Acharya and Minister for Health and Family Welfare R. Ashok. Not only this, another agenda of the meeting was to talk over the possibility to set up 1,000-bed hospitals in all district headquarters.
It discussed the viability of starting government medical colleges with private participation in all districts.
H D Kumaraswamy said that the government had thought of setting up four medical colleges in the state, however, the Medical Council of India has permitted the establishment of only two, in Belgaum and Mandya, this year.
The government wishes to establish medical colleges in Hassan and Shimoga too, and with this context, approached the Supreme Court.
The petition would come up for hearing on August 20 and depending on the decision, necessary actions will be taken.
