Yeh Dil Mange More!

This article does not pertain to the famous punch line of Cola giant Pepsi only. It pertains to the various things one gets addicted to and then these things become ‘without which not’ of ones life. These things could be aerated drinks, tea, coffee, chocolates, chewing gum, and junk food, saunf et al. Liquor, cigarettes, paan are also known addictions and are socially not welcome. However the first category is equally harmful and addictive albeit socially acceptable.

Excess of everything is bad. When one feels that one gets irritated, feels dizzy, has a headache, cannot concentrate without his or her quota of several cups of coffee or without gobbling a couple of chocolates, be rest assured that these want to (in fact have become) your companions for a lifetime..

I am not a medical expert but I can tell you that chocolates trigger the release of opiates in the brain, which like a drug, is strong enough to keep one going back for more. Likewise, caffeine, present in coffee and aerated drinks, gives a temporary high and increases the craving for such drinks.

People attribute such increase in consumption to highly stressful lifestyles one has these days. What one needs to learn is to draw a line. If 8-10 cups of coffee are required to keep you going through out the day, you are just as good as a plastic toy which needs two pencil cells to keep going. In nutshell, you are bending your knees in front of these addictions are becoming their slaves for a lifetime.

Old habits die hard, however it is of utmost importance that one gets rid of these addictions as soon as possible given the ill effects these can have on the health of a person. Will-power, patience will see one through. As Mark twain said “Habit is habit, and not to be flung out of the window by any man, but coaxed downstairs a step at a time.’
