Samsung launches 3 new ultra-slim phones

Samsung Electronics Co. Ltd., the world's third largest mobile manufacturer, launched three new ultra-slim mobile phones to tap the runaway success of Motorola's slim clamshell RAZR on Wednesday.

Headquartered in Seoul, Korea-Samsung unveiled the Ultra Edition 6.9 (AKA X820) ultra-slim candy-bar phone with 2-mega pixel camera that just weighs 66 grams and measures 6.9mm thick, claiming the outright record as the world's slimmest phone. This is slimmer than Motorola's RAZR, which is nearly half an inch or 14 millimetres thick. The 113 x 50 x 6.9mm X820 comprises a 1.9in screen, and appears to be made out of fiberglass-infused plastic.

South Korea's Samsung also launched the Ultra Edition 9.9 (D830)-the thinnest clamshell yet hewn by mankind. D830, which weighs 85 grams and measures 9.9mm thick, also offers a 2-mega pixel camera. The 103 x 54 x 9.9mm, D830 has a 2.3in screen and comes in several patterns.

The third phone unveiled by Samsung is the Ultra Edition 12.9 (D900), touted as the world's slimmest slider is a 3-mega-pixel slider phone weighing 85 grams and 12.9mm thick. The 103.5 x 51 x 12.9mm, D900 has a 3.13-megapixel camera, a 2.1in screen, and some revised interface technology, probably to make it look even more appealing.

All three devices are tri-band GSM (with EDGE), and have 60-80MB of flash memory onboard, and except the X820, take microSD cards. These devices are also Bluetooth-enabled and play MP3, AAC, AAC+, AAC +(e), and WMA.

All the phones come with viewers for Office documents, JPGs and more, while the hardware has been designed using Samsung's Smart Surface Mounting Technology (SSMT), which cuts down on the number of components inside and, just as considerably, on the electronic noise between them.

The recently launched phones would be available later this year, Samsung said in a statement.

In the January-March quarter, mobile maker extracted a global market share of 12.7%, while industry leader, Finland's Nokia had 32.8%, data from research outfit Strategy Analytics indicated.

Second-ranked American Motorola Corp. had a 20.1% share, LG Electronics Inc. held 6.8% and Sony Ericsson achieved 5.8%.
