DRUG ABUSE

It is a stressed life! We all live in a world where the competition is really high. For someone it may be of earning a livelihood for others it may be getting admission in a good institute. Someone is frustrated because of his/her girlfriend/boyfriend someone due to parents. So what do we do, start taking drugs. Is it the only option? Do they really help?

Drug abuse is the non-medical use of a drug that interferes with healthy and productive life. It occurs at all economic levels of the society, from wealthy to impoverished, and among young as well as adults. After continued use of drug some people develop a condition called drug dependency. Drug dependency can be psychological or physical or both. A person with physiological dependence carves a drug for the feeling of well being it might provide. A person with physical dependence continues drug use chiefly to avoid physical illness that results when drug use stops. Many people begin and continue to use drugs because they want a pleasurable change in the state of mind. Unfortunately, drugs only change the brain’s perception of difficulties and problems. When a drug wears off, the user’s real problem remains and might even aggravate. Some commonly abused drugs are: Stimulants : cocaine, crack, tobacco products. Depressants: alcoholic beverages, tranquillizers Marijuana and Hashish Heroin, Morphine and Codeine Hallucinogens Many harmful effects often accompany drug use. These effects include failure to achieve personal or family goal, un-desirable personality changes, physical illness and even death. It has effect on family life, friends and work. The drug users spend so much time under the effect of drugs or thinking about getting drugs that they neglect their family life, friend and work. In some cases, their actions harm the people closest to them. Besides personal damage the drug user suffers, a person’s drug use has devastating effects on others. Many drug addicts turn into criminals to support their habit. They resort to thefts, prostitution or selling drug to pay for the drugs. They are a menace to the society. The problem of drug abuse has persisted worldwide despite vast sums spent each year to stop the trade. In addition, drug traffickers have continued to commit violent crimes and make large profits. But we have to stop this menace and only educating people about the devastating effects of drugs can do this.
