The quake struck beneath the Pacific off Fukushima prefecture in the country's north, at a depth of 30.2km.
The epicenter was about 45 miles east-southeast of Fukushima and 152 miles north-northeast of Tokyo. The tremors were even felt in Tokyo.
However, the Japan Meteorological Agency said that tsunami is not expected. Also, there have been no reports of injury.quake strikes Japan's Fukushima area
Though the quake has hit the Fukushima area, no damage has been reported at region's nuclear plant which was crippled by earthquake seven month ago.
A Tokyo Electric Power Co.(TEPCO) spokesman said, “We are not seeing any new abnormality' at the facility, where work is ongoing to bring reactors to a cold shutdown by the end of this year.”
The Fukushima area has yet not fully recovered from aftermath of 8.9-magnitude earthquake and tsunami that jolted the country on March 11.
