Kling, Peterson get American surf honors

Huntington Beach, Calif. -- Florida veteran Gabe Kling and California teenager Lakey Peterson Monday were named the Association of Surfing Professionals' North American champions.

Kling, 30, of St. Augustine and Peterson, 16, of Santa Barbara, won the awards by finishing atop the association's regional rankings based on their performances in the surfing group's North American events.

Kling turned heads by winning the ASP PRIME 6.0 Lowers Pro at San Clemente, Calif., in May, and performed consistently throughout the regional season. He fought back from a serious knee injury that sidelined him for much of the 2009 season.

Peterson, meanwhile, earned the 2010 Women's ASP North America Championship nod by reaching the semifinals at the U.S. Open of Surfing at Huntington Beach, Calif., before falling to eventual champion Carissa Moore, 18, of Hawaii.
