MLS: San Jose 3, New York 1
Harrison -- Bobby Convey scored twice Thursday and the San Jose Earthquakes stunned New York 3-1 to earn a berth in the Major League Soccer semifinals.
The Earthquakes outscored New York by an aggregate of 3-2 in the two-match series and will take on either Columbus or Colorado with a spot in the league's championship match on the line.
New York was in excellent position after winning the first leg of the series 1-0 in California, but gave up a goal to Convey in the 6th minute Thursday.
It remained a 1-0 contest deep into the second half and if things had remained the same through 90 minutes the teams would have gone into a 30-minute overtime and perhaps a penalty kick shootout to determine which would advance.
Convey, however, touched off a flurry of late-game activity by scoring in the 76th minute. Juan Pablo Angel answered for New York a minute later and Chris Wondolowski produced the clinching San Jose goal in the 81st minute.
Columbus will host Colorado Saturday in the second leg of their series. Colorado won at home last week 1-0.
In the other two playoff series, Dallas will take a 2-1 lead against Real Salt Lake into their second leg Saturday and Los Angeles will own a 1-0 advantage against Seattle when they meet Sunday.
