Crude oil prices gain overnight

New York -- Crude oil prices opened higher Friday on the New York Mercantile Exchange, topping $74 per barrel, despite continued losses in Asian equity markets.

India's Sensex index rose 0.31 percent Friday, but markets in Japan, China, Taiwan, Hong Kong and Australia fell, adding to uncertainty in commodities markets.

March delivery light, sweet crude hit a high of $74.49, up $1.03 from Thursday. Heating oil prices added 0.0023 cents to open at $1.9275 per gallon.

Reformulated gasoline prices shed 0.02 cents to $1.9495 per gallon. Natural gas prices added 0.029 cents to $5.23 per million British thermal units.

At the pump, the national average price of unleaded gasoline was $2.685 per gallon Friday, down from Thursday's $2.69, AAA said.
