The bird named Cree escaped from its cage during a violent windstorm Tuesday as its owner, a veteran falconer, was on vacation in Florida, the Canadian Broadcasting Corp reported.
It was left in the care of Bob Payne, who posted a public appeal for sightings of the bird, along with a warning.
"The goshawk is going to be hungry because it's not being fed," Payne told the broadcaster. "So if people have small cats or small dogs, be mindful of that because the goshawk could swoop down and easily take a small dog or cat."
He said the $3,000 bird was last fed Monday.
The bird is brown with gray stripes and has leather straps on each ankle along with a small bell on one foot, he said.
Payne said his friend was cutting his Florida vacation short to help search for the hawk.
